the gap between the pulpit and the pew. Thus, the placing of the Reading Desk in the center of the podium will help establish better rapport between the Rabbi and Cantor and the congregation. THE SANCTUARY was not constructued adequately and hence it is necessary to improvise new approaches in order to develop an intimate feeling amongst all of us. People today want closeness and warmth and the ability to reach out and touch one another psychologically. The music lesson at the beginning of the service, when the Cantor instructs the worshippers in the responses and hymns of the prayerbook, is part of the tradition of the synagogue. Learning is the heart of the Jewish concept of worship. Thus, at our Family Service in November, I spent a good part of the time, interpreting the meaning of some of the selections. What we say and do must make sense, and appeal to the heart and mind. The need of our times is for more joy and informality in worship. We do not have to wear a solemn mien but should strive to be natural THE ROBE was taken over from the church and the academic world. I feel more comfortable worshipping without it, because Judaism has not really believed in setting aside special garb for the clergy. Every Jew is expected to wear a talit and to put on tefilin. Every Jew at one time used to wear a kitel on Yom Kippur. It is not the garb that makes a Rabbi more religious. The Rabbi should be part of a community of worshippers. In other words, we would like to develop a fellowship of worshippers who celebrate the miracle to Judaism each Friday night. I would like to see as many of you wear a talit and a Yarmulke, sing along with the Cantor, read the Hebrew with me, and participate fully and wholeheartedly in every aspect of worship.

SOON WE WILL ADD a new dimension, that of the dance, as part of our Creative Service. We have three choirs, trained by our music director. We have been most successful with our Forums. Our staff works hard and enjoys its religious labor. What about you? Will you insist on selling Judaism short? Or will you be part of those members who on Friday night are determined to sing a new song unto the Lord?

I ask you, if everyone in town knew that I was out flat for a good 48 hours, drinking hot tea and lemon the whole day, with a fever and a headache, hardly able to talk on the telephone, and feeling pretty low, how come my doctor . didn’t even inquire about my health? Up until then I thought he was a pretty nice guy, but now I see him for what he really is. And to think — people call medicine the “noble profession." Bah! Humbug!
