JEWISH POST AND OPINION

NAMES IN THE NEWS

The Man Who Built The Succah

Charles Biusso’s family hails from Sicily. They are Roman Catholics, and live in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Sunday before Succoth, he arrived at the home of his friend, Dan Chick, in Albany, N.Y. with a station wagon full of material, and proceeded to build a succah, complete with plastic windows. Adding the fall foliage for the final touch, Biusso said, according to The Jewish World, of Albany, “It’s what any good Christian would do for a friend.”

The Miller Family Michael Miller has become the 26th member of a single family to attend Yeshiva University over the years. Michael, who enrolled at Yeshiva College this fall, is the son of Dr. Israel Miller, himself an alumnus, who was recently appointed assistant to the president for student affairs at the University after serving 26 years as spiritual leader of the Kingsbridge Heights Jewish Center. Within the Miller household at 2619 Davidson Ave., Bronx, are two other members of the Yeshiva University family. Mrs. Ruth Miller, Michael’s mother and Dr. Miller’s wife, received a master’s degree from the University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Michael’s brother, David, a June, 1968 summa cum laude graduate of Yeshiva College, is now attending the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, a University affiliate from which their father was ordained as a rabbi in 1941. Other members of the direct line of Millers with ties to the University are Dr. Miller’s brother — Samuel Miller and David Miller. So are Samuel Miller’s sons, Daniel and Joshua, and David Miller’s son, Stanley and daughter, Debby, who are currently students at the University. The roots of the family tree, which also includes a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, are Michael’s grandparents, Samuel and Nettie Goldman, active in civic affairs in Hartford, Conn., and Tobias and Bluma Miller of Baltimore, Md.

Quotation Of The Week Week after week the statistics come. The body count. So many Americans this week. The figures are up or down the next week. The faceless numbers. The impersonal casualties. All at once you see a face. As the weeks and months (and years?) go by, we will see more of those faces, young faces, solemn and earnest faces that seem to embody a secret wisdom now that death has taken them. They look at you out of their photographs as though even the picture were dead. Such a face comes to me each day now. It is the face of Gerald Pelzman, whom I confirmed ten years ago and who was killed during the disastrous Viet Cong offensive. We are told that the American casualties were “moderate.” How moderate was Gerald’s death? How moderate is the death that has entered into his parents’ home? The war in Vietnam is not far iway. It is as close as the street where his family lives. It is as close as Room 103 where he sat with twenty-five other boys and girls and from the front or second seat of the extreme left row challenged me about my theological views. And now Gerald’s wisdom about the Mystery is greater than mine. The lines are fluid in this war and they are spreading more and more into the cities and homes and streets and schools of America. And how many faces of how many Gerald Pelzmans will we have to see before we cry out, in a tidal wave of horror, to those who lead us toward doom, “Enough. Begone.” — Rabbi David Polish, Beth Emet Congregation, Evanston, 111.

With The Cantors Zvi Ghelman, of Buenos Aires, has been appointed Cantor of Temple of Aaron, St Paul, Minn.

Sermon Of The Week One Million Jewish Women Can’t Be Wrong — Rabbi Harry Essrig, University Synagogue, West Los Angeles.

Benny, The Advertising Man Even though the advertising agency head who thought up the idea of Jack Benny as a purveyor of Texaco gasoline over the air waves is not averse to taking credit for creativity, he pays tribute to the Jewishhumorist Mitch Epstein, creative director of Benton & Bowles, the ad agency, told a meeting in Wilmington, Del., that Benny was a man with the greatest ability to edit content of ad copy, demonstrating an uncanny knack for spotting a line too short or too long. Benny, Benny according to Epstein, said this ability is something the humorist must actually feel by experience, which enables him to detect when a short or long line may spoil a laugh.

Prolific Genius The forthcoming publication of Isaac “Asimov’s Guide to the Bible,” by Doubleday casts the spotlight on one of the most unusual authors alive. The 48-year-old associate professor of

biochemistry at Boston University’s School of Medicine published his first book 20 years ago, and since has added another 99 to his credit. He types 90 words a minute, and produces as many as 35 pages of manuscript a day. He has been known to finish a book in less than two weeks. Impressive as is this ability, the range of his subjects and the quality of his writing add still other dimensions. A huge following recognize him for leadership in science fiction writing. He is equally adept at nonfiction science material and he has done several distinguished histories and books on geography.

Two Negro Stars

A number of Negroes interviewed told Photoplay Magazine that at first they condemned Sammy Davis, Jr.,

for converting to Judaism, but reversed their opinion when he proved his sincerity about his new faith. Davis did not fare so well when the matter of his admiration for white females was discussed in the article entitled, “Why Negroes Love Sidney Poitier and Hate Sammy Davis, Jr.” Poitier earned the affection of those interviewed because he prefers Black women. His wife whom he recently divorced was Black and his new flame Diahann Carroll is Black. Socially, also, his friends are of the

dark set while Davis’ friends are Sinatra, Dean Martin and Peter

Lawford.

Small Step Forward A step forward in Arab, Jewish relations that did not go unnoticed by the press was the attendance of both Abba Eban and Mahmud Riad at the reception for Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The rare diplomatic feat was somewhat dampened by the fact that the Israeli foreign minister came and went before the Egyptian foreign minister made his appearance. Yet it was a breakthrough of sorts, most observers felt. Arab representatives stated that “at big receptions we don’t mind if Israelis also are present,” but this is a big shift from the many occasions when the Arabs would announce publicly in advance that they were boycotting small or large receptions to which Israelis had also been invited.

Another Prize Winner Following on the heels of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Rene Cassia, famed Fiench humanist, Dr. Marshall W. Nirenberg, 41, of the National Institute of Health, was one of three doctors who were jointly awarded the 1968 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine . . . Krysztof Topolski, son of the former Jewish government minister, has been sentenced to a year and a half in jail for insulting the Polish nation. His crime: “asserting that only Jews were fit to govern Poland.” The 21-year-old sociology student was alleged to be one of the ringleaders of the student demonstrations last March. The charges against young Topolski included remarks he is alleged to have made to the effect that Poles collaborated with German occupation forces in World War II, and that “All famous people were of Jewish origin.”

What Makes It Work The success of the Brandeis Camp Institute with Jewish teens and young adults has won the attention of Jewish leaders throughout the United States and now a social scientist, Dr. Jacob L. Hurwitz, is studying the techniques worked out by the originator of the Institute, Shlomo Bardin. Prof. Hurwitz, of Wayne State University, Detroit, and a team of sociologists will study the Institute and its 4,000 odd graduates to learn the impact of the unique experiment in living Judaism. The study is being sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, whose former executive vice president, John Slawson was attracted to the Brandeis experiment, and saw in it the possibility for adoption as a national program.

Share For Israel Using CARE packages as his model, a Miami Beach Jewish businessman has worked out a unique plan that will help Israel. He is Sam Silver, and the name of the project is SHARE. Under it, a person buys a gift package for as small an amount as $10. The items in the package include such delicacies as gefilte fish, latkes, pumpernickel, jellies, candied fruit, and even light-weight blankets, table cloths and hand towels, and other products, all manufactured in Israel. The parcel is mailed from Israel. The program is expected to earn Israel $5 million a year in balance of payments, and has attracted the attention of Jewish groups throughout the United States.

With The Executives Sol Koenigsberg, assistant associate director of the Milwaukee Jewish Welfare Fund has been named executive director of the Jewish Federation and Council of Greater Kansas City.
