sity said here.

Speaking to the American Jewish Committee’s annual meeting, Dr. Greenberg, who also is Rabbi of Riverdale Jewish Center, said: “MAJOR HISTORIC events have always reshaped Jewish life. While the whole world are survivors of Auschwitz, it is particularly basic to Jews to reaffirm life at all costs.” ‘‘The key to Jewish existence,” he continued, “has been the willingness to accept the obligations of choseness. A new religious emphasis has emerged since the Holocaust. As a result, this generation of young American Jews is less self-conscious about its Judaism than were their parents. And it is less sentimental and more critical of the synagogue. “While their parents practice a vicarious religion, manifested through communal activity and a limited synagogue attendance, this generation wishes to integrate religion into its life. These young people are less conventional and have fewer hang ups about their identity as Jews than their parents. “UNFORTUNATELY, the religious institutions, which are geared to the thinking of the

1930’s, are unprepared for them. And because the young people are clearer about their identity, they will be less fearful of changes of double loyalty, which

they will dismiss.”

The Holocaust affected religion, Dr. Greenberg pointed out, by bringing about a greater

concern for the survivors — for human needs, with a de-empha-sis on formal religious affirmations. On another religious level. Dr. Greenberg added, he detects a new dialectic of faith and doubt as the events of the Nazi period are reexamined.
