The Sports Post Not AH Guards Are Dumb Brutes By GEORGE VASS It can’t be said of Aaron Rosenberg that he was posseMed of great foresight in his youth. In the early 1930s, after playing as an All-American guard for three seasons on the University of Southern California football team, Rosenberg made a big decision. He took a $40 a week job as a second assistant movie producer. He rejected a $500 per game football contract with the professional Brooklyn Dodgers. “AT THAT TIME, I didn’t see any future in pro football,” he said. “I’ve never regretted that decision.” Well, pro football has come a long way since then, but on the other hand so has Vass Rosenberg, now a big-time movie producer. His latest film is “The Detectives,” starring Frank Sinatra and Lee Remick. His football reputation still pursues him, strangely, to his embarrassment. “I’ve been trying to beat the rap of being a football player for nearly 35 years,” said Rosenberg, still a solid 6-foot, 209pounds. “But it’s tough. People think of you as a big, stupid guy. They don’t expect much from you. Sometimes I surprise them.” HE BEGAN SURPRISING them early in life. Born in Brooklyn, the son of a tailor, Rosenberg was struck by a car at the age of 7. With Aaron’s, health impaired, the elder Rosenberg moved the family to Los Angeles. A more unlikely future All-American never existed. But Roserberg grew into a husky, big boy, made the All-Los Angeles city high school football team for four straight years and was recruited by USC in 1930. In 1932 and 1933 he made most All-American teams as a guard and was a major factor in a 27-game unbeaten string the Trojans put together. The string included Rose Bowl victories over Tulane and Pittsburgh. BUT THE BIGGEST thrill for Rosenberg came early in the string. It was USC’s memorable 16-14 upset of Notre Dame in 1931. “But I had little to do with the victory,” he insisted. “Notre Dame was on a 26-game winning streak. We came back from a 14-0 deficit (in the final quarter) to win 16-14 on Johnny Baker’s field goal in the last minute. “Baker was a replacement for me. I was backing up the line early in the third period when I got suckered and Notre Dame scored its second touchdown. Coach Howard Jones pulled me out so fast I caught cold.” JONES, HOWEVER, had the highest regard for Rosenberg’s skill. “Aaron is the best guard I ever coached,” he said, “undoubtedly the best running guard in football.” His football fame gave Rosenberg an entry to summer jobs With a movie studio. “If it hadn’t been for football,” Rosenberg said, “I might (Continued on Next Page)

Judge Rules In Child Case
BEERSHEBA — Being employed is not enough — one must earn enough to be able to support his children. Thus ruled District Court Judge S. Elkayam in directing a father to seek other employment so he can earn enough to support his offsprings. The Social welfare Ministry went to court to compel the man, employed as a farm worker, to pay toward the upkeep of his children. The children have been living with foster parents because of the father’s inability to pay for their upkeep. The judge declared it is a father’s duty to support his children and promptly ordered him to get a higher-paying job.
Beatles At Memorial Wear Yarmulkes LONDON — Yarmulke - wearing Beatles attended memorial services here for Brian Epstein, who made them famous and rich. As the Beatles trekked into the synagogue and to their seats, the eyes of the congregants were upon them bout only because of the reverence they showed for Jewish customs by wearing the traditional head-covering. London and the world has become accustomed to the Beatles, who are no longer curiosities. As they sat in the pews they were indistinguishable, except for their long hair, from other worshippers. The service, conducted by Rabbi Louis Jacobs, was attended by an array of theatrical and musical figures.
