sundry expenses. Earlier it had been reported by Mrs. Max Schenl of New York, national treasurer of the organization, that Hadassah in the fiscal year from July 1, 1965 to June 30, 1966, had raised a total of $12,110,547 for its health, child rehabilitation, vocational education, land redemption programs in Israel, and for its educational and youth programs in the United States. Among the resolutions adopted by the convention was one placing Hadassah on record in support of the Civil Rights Act of 1966 now before the Congress of the United States. In a resolution dealing with the U.S. foreign aid program, Hadassah endorsed legislation designed to continue the provisions of Public Law 480 covering the U.S. “Food for Peace”

program.

In another resolution, dealing with the Arab refugee problem, the convention called on the United Nations Works and Relief Agency to remove from the ration lists those Arab refugees “who are being trained for aggression against the people of a member state of the United

Nations.”

Highlighting the convention were addresses by Senator Eldward M. Kennedy of Massachusettes and former Senator William Benton of Connecticut, now serving as U.S. Ambassador to

UNESCO.

Dealing with the social crisis in America triggered by the Negro fight for* full rights, Senator Kennedy said that (me of “the most hopeful” signs in the development was participation by religious leadership in the cause of reform. Without that leadership, he said, Congress last year

might not have passed the Civil Rights Act. Touching on the Arab refugee problem, the Massachusetts Senator said that “so long as the Arab refugee problem exists, so long as the Arab states refuse to bend in any way, the threat to Israel’s security will exist.” Ambassador Benton, who together with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman were given the first “Key to Freedom” awards by Hadassah, urged the U.S. to take the lead in a world-wide campaign to make English a second language, since English is the primary language, the mother tongue, for at least 270 million people in the world. In an exhaustive report on the health situation in Israel, Dr. Kalman J. Mbnn, directorgeneral of the Hadassah Medical Organization, disclosed that improvement in Israel’s external environment, coupled with active immunization and the use of antibiotics, had eliminated infectious diseases as the main cause of death and served to increase average life expectancy in Israel to more than 70 years.
