Strong U.S. Zionist Movement Urged
LONG BEACH, N.Y. — A "strong Zionist movement in the United States is more necessary than ever to consolidate the rallying of the Jewish people around Israel” as it is facing confrontation “with weighty political, economic and cultural problems during the next decade,” it was declared here by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization. Addressing the opening session of the 56th annual convention of the Religious Zionists of America, Dr. Goldmann said the Zionist movement "will be required to stand more and more in the front line of the struggle against” what he called “the erosive and blinding dangers of assimilation and disintegration which constitute the gravest menace to Jewish survival in our period.” The convention was attended by some 1,000 delegates. One of the principal convention speakers, Nachum Shamir, Israel’s Economic Minister in the United States, told the parley that since immigrants to Israel were not subjected to any screening processes, the non-re-strictive policy was burdening the community with need to look after the requirements of the
newcomers in health, education, housing, social welfare and employment. Another speaker, Rabbi Bezalel Cohen, head of the World Religions Zionist Movement, told the convention that the National Religious Party in Israel was seeking elimination of military restrictions on the movement of Israeli Arabs, encouragement of low-cost housing for young married couples and a free enterprise approach to provision of rental units.
