Series Starts Sunday sing Event

Hurd Hatfield and the late Myron McCormick, co-star in scenes from Goethe’s Faust in a premier telecast launching the new series of religious broadcasts ‘‘Legacy of Light” in Indianapolis, this Sunday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. over Channel 13. Rabbi Maurice Davis of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation is local host for the series. “Faust” will be the first of ten weekly half hour programs relating the percepts of the Ten Commandments to the moral issues of our time. “Legacy of Light” will be shown on Channel 13 on ten consecutive Sundays. Myron McCormick plays Mephistopheles and Hatfield plays the part of Faust. The dramatization explains how Faust illuminates the meaning of the First Commandment, “I am the Lord, thy God”. Ben Gazzara, Margaret O’Brien, Nancy Coleman, Donald Davis, Vivian Nathan, Vincent Gardenia, Ben Piazza, Lenka Peterson and the Anna Sokolow Lyric Theatre head the list of performers taking part in the series. Arvella Gray, popular Chicago street singer, will perform at the Jewish Community Center’s Folk Sing on Saturday evening, March 21 at 8:30 p.m. at the Center, 6701 Hoover Road. He has been a street singer since he was blinded many years ago. He began playing his guitar — a steel-body instrument with a resonator — m “Mississippi bottleneck style,” i.e., sliding a bottleneck up and down the strings to change a

Sidney Foster, guest soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on the weekend of March 28 and 29, will lead the Symphony Seminar of the Jewish Community Center on Thursday evening, March 26 at 8:00 p.m.

Hodossah Unit Sets Mock Sedar Mrs. Irving Joffe, president, Indianapolis Business and Professional Group of Hadassah, announces that plans have been completed to hold a “Mock Sedar” at the Indiana National Bank branch, 38th and Washington Boulevard, Wednesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m. Hie “mock sedar” will be conducted by Cantor Robert Zalkin of Beth-El Temple. Cantor Zalkin will conduct a complete Hagadah service to commemorate the approaching Passover Holidays. Hostesses for the evening are: Mrs. Kiefer Lazzurus, Mrs. Moe Kaufman, Mrs. Morris Simon, Mrs. Emil Adelman, Mrs. Edward Fershtman, and Miss Rose Vigodner. Prof. Foster, of the Indiana University School of Music faculty, will speak on “Rhapsody of the Theme of Paganini” by Rachmaninoff, which he will perform with the Indianapolis Symphony. Prof. Foster, a native of Florence, S. C., was graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music hi Philadelphia in 1938. He has made a solo recital eoast-to-coast tour yearly appearing as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, 4 Detroit Symphony. He has appeared in an annual concert in Carnegie Hall, and has been the recipient of Leventritt Award and Mac Dowell Award. Julius Marx will introduce the speaker. Mrs. Joe Adelsman will be the hostess.

String Quartet To Perform At Hadassah Event The Indianapolis Chapter of Hadassah will hold its March 25 meeting at the Governor’s Mansion, 4343 North Meridian Street, at 12:30 p.m. Mrs. Harry Alpert, program chairman of the Day, announces the program will feature the newly-formed String Quartet of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Members of the quartet include Eric Rosenblith, violinist and concertmaster of our symphony for twelve years; Michael Rudiakov, from Tel-Aviv, Israel, principal cellist in his first season with our orchestra; David Jackson, from Killara, New South Wales, Australia, principal violinist also in his first year in Indianapolis; and Robert Zimmer, violinist, with our orchestra for twelve years. Mrs. Julian Freeman, Hospitality Chairman, has charge of the dessert luncheon. The opening prayer will be offered by Mrs. Robert Zalkin, the closing prayer by Mrs. Lester Engel. Decorations are by Mrs. Saul Hochman and Mrs. Jack Taslitz. Program coordinator for Hadassah is Mrs. Max Furer. Mrs. Abe M. Kulwin is Hadassah President.
