7 U.S. Jewish Organizations Urge Eshkol to Resist Orthodox Pressure
NEW YORK — Seven major American Jewish organizations have petitioned Israel Prime Minister Levi Eshkol not to give in to pressure from Orthodox elements and to stand firm on behalf of religious freedom. Their entreaty was believed to be based on campaigns by Orthodox elements which they feel infringe on religious liberty'. Among the matters involved are protests against Sabbath traffic and bids to shut down missionary schools. The organizations said that their reluctance to enter into the controversy until this time has been “interpreted as either indifference to or acquiescence in the position” of a “small but
vocal minority of religious extremists in Israel and the United States.” They said the “overwhelming majority” of American Jews supported the separations of church and state in principle. The signers of the appeal were: Morris B. Abram, American Jewish Committee president; Dr. Joachim Prinz, American Jewish Congress president; Label Katz, B’nai B’rith president; Rabbi Leon I. ^euer, Central Conference of American Rabbis (Reform) president; Rabbi Theodore Friedman, Rabbinical Assembly of "America (Conservative) president; Rabbi Maurice N. gregations (Reform) president; and George Maislen, United Syoagogue of America (Conservative) president. In Israel, The Jerusalem Post reported Dr. Zerah Wahrhaftig, Minister for Religous Affairs, replied that “there is only one way to influence legislation in Israel and that is by settling here and participating in the elections to the Knesset.” In New York, The New York Times reported Rabbi Israel Klavan, executive vice-president of the Rabbinical Council of America (Orthodox), as saying that his group had communicated with Eshkol on the missionary problem. “Missionizing of parentless children does not fall into the category of religious freedom,” he said. “The Jewish community has the duty to defend its religious continuity.”

Religious School Head Blasts Critics of Yiddish as 'Jargon'
PHILADELPHIA — CriUcs of
teaching Yiddish in Hebrew day schools and who denounce the language as "jargon” were themselves criticized by a Philadelphia religious school principal, the Philadelphia Jewish Times reported. Jacob Riz, principal of the I. S. P e r e t z Workmen’s Circle Schools, said that Yiddish ought to be a “must requirement” not only in day schools but all Hebrew schools. “American Jewish children
must feel they have their own language besides English,” Riz said. “Jewish youths must know that Yiddish is a holy language and not think of it in terms of jargon, as some Hebrew educators are telling their students.” Riz deplored the fact that “Jewish schools” such as Gratz College do not require Yiddish. “If Yiddish is taught in English high schools and colleges, why can’t it be learned in Hebrew schools which are themselves ’Jewish schools,'” be
said.
