Max Lerner Charges: Americans Ashamed to Talk Of Jewishness of Goldwater

NEW YORK — Americans are reluctant to discuss the Jewish ancestry of presidential aspirant Sen. Barry Goldwater because they are embarrassed at talking about Jewishness, Max Lerner wrote in his syndicated column. “You can speak of a man in public life as a Catholic and no one catches his breath,” Lerner wrote. “But speak of him as a Jew, and both of you catch a whiff of possible anti-Semitism in the air.” Lerner said that the American public’s reluctance to write about Goldwater as a Jew isn’t healthy either for the country or the Jews. “To be sure, he is only a halfJew by heredity and a converted Jew — an Episcopalian — by his practicing faith,” Lerner

The experience of Jews throughout history has been that even when they are only partly Jewisdi, and even if they or their parents are converted, the world thinks of them as Jews — and so does history.” r eroer labeled it a* iroay that Goldwater’s following, “which must have a largish proportion of people who regard Jews as foreigners and perhaps even as Communists, are quite ready to
swallow his Jewishness and like it.” That irony, he said, is manifested in Goldwater’s appeal to Southern racists, despite the fact that Jews have played a prime role in the civil rights fight of the Negro today. “That is why it is extraordinary for the people farthest on the Right, who are the most vocal and active among whites in the backlash’ counter-revolu-tion, to find the man to whom they look as a fiery leader of their crusade has links of kinship with the Jews they have come to distrust,” Lerner said. Lerner reemphasized that there is no reason why this shouldn’t be spoken of. He said it was “sheer delight” for him to think of the “super-patriots,” who would distrust Sen. Javits because he is Jewish, backing Goldwater, while Jews, unmoved by Goldwater’s Jewish ancestry, will stay with President Kennedy. Lerner said the real test of whether America is ready for a Jewish president will not come on Goldwater’s battle for the Republican nomination. “It is more likely to come with the candidacy of someone like Sen. Javits of Justice Goldberg,” Lerner wrote. “I suspect that the willingness to consider such men is at least a decade away, maybe more.”

over 55. They get a small but steady income from this. The pensions paid to former officials of American-owned oil companies are reported to be the highest. The third group of about 125,000 is the largest, however. They are often forced to try to sustain themselves at subsistence level by selling household effects, clothing and the like or depend on community charity for a daily meal. Numbered among this group are members of previously wealthy families whose fortunes and properties were taken away by the State. Former “society ladies” are often seen nursing groups of workers’ children in the parks or teaching them foreign languages. While those who can afford to, hire these women for caring for their children, the government formally frowned on such practices. Jews in Rumania were said to Enjoy equal educational opportunities at the secondary and vocational schools. There is discrimination against them at the university level. Because of this, many young Jews turn to employment in textile, metal, footwear and clothing far lories. An informed source told the Chronicle that there are no Jews among the university graduates in the academic professions. Jews usually flock tn the Central Synagogue in Bucharest during the High Holy Days, although many are sa’o to go to hear the excellent cDoir and soloists.
Jewish Wrestling Star' Big Hit in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG (P-O) — A curious announcement recently appeared in the Zionist Record and S.A. Jewish Chronicle. It read; “Sir — I, “The Star of David,” announce my intention to enter the professional wrestling ring. “The few Jewish professional wrestlers appearing in the ring at the moment are all oin-and-out villains and it is to wipe out this slur on Jewish sportsmanship that I have assumed professional status and also the name ‘Star of David.’ “Being a well known Natal businessman, I am using a mask to cover my identify until such time as I am defeated. “'Ilie Star of David” There was no return street address on the letter, the Record noted in publishing the letter, and it subsequently waited to see if “Tiie Star” would appear as he promised or turn out to be just a hoax. A few weeks later, however, the Star made his appearance. He came into tlie Record office wearing a powder blue mask and shepherded by “Bull” Hefer, a popular Johannesburg wrestling promoter. "Just call me David,” the Star said, as he sat down in the newspaper office. He then proceeded to fill the fast-gathering Record staff in on some of the details about his new career. "I wrestled as an amateur for some years,” he said. “And I trained against some of the overseas stars who came to fight in Durban. My reasons for turning professional you know. They are to prove myself a worthy champion of Jewish sportsmanship by knowledge, speed and strength and not by the spectacularly foul tactics in use at present.” The Star has carefully maintained his Jewish image in becoming a favorite of the Johannesburg crowd. He donated his first purse to a Jewish orphanage. He also refuses to wrestle on Friday nights. (“I’m Orthodox,” he said.”)

THE STAR OF DAVID No Sabbath Boots The Star is reputed to be a staid Durban businessman in private life. According to Hefer, he is 27 years old, six feet tall and weighs between 220 and 230 pounds. It is the manner in which he dresses in the ring that, in addition to his clean and hard wrestling, has made him a big favorite among Jewish fans in particular and wrestling fans in general. He is completely covered, wearing a hood, longsleeved sweater and long woolen “gatkes.” However, on his chest and on the outside of his shoes he wears the Star of David. Now that he is such a big success, he has new aims. His ambition is to drop his present business and travel all over the world, including the United States where he says he has relatives.
Congressman Charges Pogroms Against Jews in Soviet Union NEW YORK — A New York City Congressman has indicated he will request President Kennedy to include concessions from the Soviet Union on its anti-Jewish campaigns in any wheat deal between the two countries, John W. Newton wrote in the New York Journal-Amcri-
can.
Rep. John M. Murphy (D.-Brooklyn-Stalen Island) said he had reports of daily slayings through pogroms behind the Iron Curtain. He said the source of much of this information was the Federation of Jewish Welfare Agencies. Rep. Murphy said the pogroms are so massive in scope that within the next decade more than three million Jews face extinction, Newton said. Murphy also stated that Brooklyn Surrogate Maximilian Moss, head of the Brooklyn Jewish Council, had also registered a protest
against the pogroms.
Jews 1 1st Aged Home Opened in Morocco
“We have made a survey which shows that there are approximately 450 aged now on community relief in Casablanca,” Jordan said. “Of these, 70 are blind and more than 50 are completely bedridden. Until we are able to provide accommodations tor them, our new medical program will reach every one of them in their homes and available clinics.”
GENEVA - The first Jewish home for the aged in Morocco has opened in Casablanca and will provide a program for 60 people there, according to Charles H. Jordan, director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee. 'Hie home is a joint project of the Casablanca Jewish community and JDC.
