Bouquet of the Week Memo to: MA^ER FLOWER SHOP 144 E. Ohio St. Send this week’s bovuet tr "Mama” Miller
Jottings From Joyce
“ManKi” Miller This week’s bouquet goes to Mrs. Anna — better known as “Mama” — Miller — ambassador extraordinary in the culinary world and friend to thousands at home and in faraway places. Mrs. Miller is recovering from injuries suffered in a fall at the famed restaurant she founded in the Roaring Twenties. But by the time this is read, she is expected io be home from the hospital and reunited with her son, Abe, and his family, who just returned from a trip to Israel and Europe. “Mama” Miller, small in stature but big of heart, is an institution. Her face is as familiar in Indianapolis as the many specialties that made her restaurant famous — from chicken noo-" die and matzohball soup to her unequalled strudel. It’s a long way from the walkup restaurant at the corner of Illinois and Maryland she founded in 1925 to the spacious, ultramodern restaurant the family now operates across the street from the Statehousd at the corner of Market and Capitol. And although “Mama” has retired and management of the restaurant has been turned over to the younger generation (Herb Melrose & Co.), Mrs. Miller is still much in evidence. “Just visiting,” she would explain. making her way from one table to another, but everyone knows she wants to be sure the foods still are cooked the same way and that the customers are happy. As son Abe puts it, “She is the grandest woman in the world.”

Police Detective Sheldon Lasky said several persons, some of them suspects, have been questioned. He said every “lead” was being followed up in an effort to apprehend the criminals. “We believe whoever is responsible lives within about a one-mile radius,” Lasky said. “As far as we can ascertain, there were no witnesses, such as passers-by, which makes it difficult and we had to start from scratch.” He said the broken beer bottles yielded no fingerprints.
