Addresses St. Peter Clover Rabbi Charges Hypocrisy
Rabbi Maurice Davis charged this week that for a century, Americans lived “a national life of hypocrisy” by not living up to the basic right of freedom and justice. “For 100 years we have promulgated the myth that America belonged to some of the people,” while offering “scraps of condescension to those whose credentials were otherwise.” But, he told the 48th national convention of the Knights of St. Peter Claver here Tuesday night, this year will go down in history as “the year the Negroes ran out of patience and America
ran out of time.” * The Catholic fraternal organization held its week-long convention in Indianapolis and was dedicated to Cardinal Laurian Rugambwa, the church’s first Negro cardinal. Rabbi Davis, spiritual leader of Indianapolis Hebrew Congreg£p tion, said although Indiana can be proud of progress it has made in civil rights, “no one among us has yet the right to walk with head held high. . “If America can solve this, her greatest moral problem, then this could w'ell become her finest hour,” the rabbi said.
