Jewish Folklore Session Held On Indiana Campus

Mr., Mrs. Andrew Marshall Honeymooning In Europe

A Jewish Folklore session was held on the Bloomington campus July 1 in cooperation with the Chair of Judaic Studies under Prof. Henry A. Fischel. At the main session, Prof. Fischel read a formal paper o n “The Uses of the Song of Songs in Jewish * Tradition”. Jerome Mintz, Assistant Jt'roiessor o f Folklore, I.U., who co-ordinated the session, reported on a personality test which he conducted with New York Hasidic children; Miriam Fraenkel, grad, student from Israel and formerly Iran, pleaded for a study of the vanishing customs of Persian Jews in Israel; Dan Ben-Amos of Israel, grad, student in folklore spoke on the manuscripts of the “Shivchei haBesht”, the first Hasidic compilation, and Richard Bauman, grad, student of English and folklore, contributed a short biography of Yudel Cahan, the late

“Dean” of Yiddish folklore. Prof. Fischel supplemented the session by a report on the r esources and bibliography of Jewish Folklore. More than 70 advanced graduates and teachers of folklore from all parts of the world participated. Part of the program was reproduced in an educational TV program. Son, Family Visiting Mrs. Rose Ecktman Mrs. Rose Ecktman, 5546 Primrose, is being visited by her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ecktman and two children from Ft. Hood, Texas. He has been in the service 16Vi years.

Honeymooning in Europe are Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Marshall. Mrs. Marshall is the former Miss Vicki Goldberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris M. Goldberg, 5146 N. Penn. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Marshall of New York City. The couple was wed in a double ring ceremony in the SavoyHilton in New York City June 24. The bride’s sister, Terri Goldberg was maid of honor; bridesmaids were Ronnie Kaplan of Spring Valley, N. Y., and Joan Becker of New York City. Steve Marshall, brother of the groom, was best man, Bob Franklin of New York City and Phil Kaplan of Spring Valley, N. Y., were ushers. The bride attended Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans where . she was a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority. The groom is

a graduate of New York University. The newlyweds plan to return from Europe July 13 and reside at 382 Central Park West, apartment 5V, New York, N. Y. Broadmoor Will Hold Nine Hole Turnament Broadmoor Country club will hold a 9 hole mixed two ball tournament with 20 couples today. Dinner will follow. Chairmen are Mrs. Alvin Levenson and Mrs. Leonard Larman. NAACP Youth To Picket Today The NAACP Youth Council will picket Riverside Amusement Park today for removal of 23 “Patronage of Whites only, solicited” signs.

David Winston Dies In Auto Accident David M. Winston, 17 year old high school senior from North Miami, Fla., was killed in an automobile accident in Elizabethtown, Ky., last week en route to Indianapolis. David’s father is Ben Winston of Indianapolis. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Jewl Winston, a younger sister, Joy Ruth Winston, both of North Miami, Fla., and a grandmother, Mrs. Ida Weinstein, 3558 Central Ave. Funeral services were at the Aaron-Ruben Funeral Home. Burial was in Beth-El Zedeck Cemetery.

Beth-El Dedicates Chapel On June 27 Beth-El dedicated an air conditioned chapel June 27 for daily services and summer Saturday services. The chapel was converted from classrooms with minimum e xpenditure due to several member* efforts. Beth El needed a permanent chapel. Previously the chapel wa* small and temporary.
