The National Jewish POST and OPINION
YOUR NAME' By Norbert Pearlrolh Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I notice that your column always deals with names of European sources. Can you help me with mine? As far I can trace it — at least three generations — my family has lived in Eretz Israel. Have you any clues to the origin of the name "Bassan"? — CHAPLAIN JACOB BASSAN, Kings-
ton, Ontario.
BASSAN (or Bassani) is a Jewish rabbinical family
of Italian origin, the name being derived from the Italian city of Bassano near Venice. The family was distinguished by having produced a large number of rabbis, holding office in such cities as Venice, Mantua, Verona and Padua. One Jacob ben Abraham Bassan was the Chacham (Rabbi) of the Portuguese Jewish community of Hamburg in the 18th century. Altogethther I counted seventeen successive generations of rabbis bearing this distinguished name. This record sheds brilliant glory upon your tribe.
Dear Mr. Pearlroth: Will you kindly inform me as co the origin of my family name? My father came from Lithuania, of the family, Corkland. A brother spelled it K-o-r-k-l-a-n. The city they lived in was Kovno. — MRS. ISADORE ROSENBLATT, Knoxville,
Tenn.
KORKLAN — the original version of the name — is of geographical origin. It was taken from the name of the little town of Korklany in the district of Rossiene, Lithuania. The Lithuanian name of the town was Karklanai, a word meaning "Willows". Korklany is the locality where your family originated.

Chimney Yields Grim Echo of Nazi Savagery CHOLET, France (P-0) — A treasure of $300,000 in notes and bonds believed stuffed into a chimney here in 1942 by a wealthy Jewish cattle trader who was arrested with his family by the Nazis and deported, has been found by two chimney sweeps. The money and bonds were secreted in a hole in the chimney. The house’s former owner — Felix Levy — apparently cranumed the treasure into a small suitcase and hid it as the weird “bleat” of the Nazi police van echoed in the street outside the windows of his home. Meet Your Rabbi - You May Need Him WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (P-O) —
Get to know your Rabbi.
Getting acquainted with him and giving him an opportunity to get acquainted with you, may prove
of value in several ways.
For example, many times people wish to use the Rabbi as a character reference. The need for such a reference might crop up in
the business or social world.
Your son might want to join the Boy Scouts and they will check with his Rabbi to determine his diligence in synagogue attendance and his general devotion to
Jewish religious values.
When high school students wish to apply to colleges for admission, many of them phone the rabbi seeking permission to use his name
as a character reference. .
Writing in the weekly Bulletin of the Hebrew Institute of White Plains, Rabbi Murray Grauer asks “From the Rabbi’s point of view, how well does he know the people he speaks for? As 1 have often written with respect to the very ■ large congregation, it is almost impossible for the rabbi to even identify the large majority of his people. In the moderate size congregation, he may know them by name but there still exists a great | void in his knowledge of his people. “I have an earnest desire to be truthful when I speak favorably of my people. Come often and let us always know each other more intimately. There exists in me the belief that greater intimacy with 1

Beersheba (P-O) — Until prices improve the autumn potato crop in Lachish and the Negev will be put in cold storage, according to

it was decided that the prices offered by the Vegetable Marketing Board — IL 180 a Ion — would leave them with a net loss. The low price was set in consideration of the anticipated surplus of 5,000 tons, according to Mr. Benzion Yitzhar, chairman of the VMB. He said that last year’s price of IL 230 a ton was too high while the present surplus was the result of poor planning. Observers believe he only hope the farmers have of obtaining a decent price for their produce would b? if the government manages to lind a buyer abroad for at least 4,000 tons of potatoes. Last year’s exports sold for IL 90 a ton.
