On December 21st Hendrych Holland, one of the handful of Polish Jews to survive the Nazi occupation of his country, threw himself out of his fifth-floor window in his Warsaw apartment. Again a Jewish light has gone out, only this time under the fury of Communist ideological insanity. First the Communists saved young Holland, when he joined their party during world War II, after having fought in a Left wing resistance group. After the war, Holland, known by his friends as an idealistic believer in Poland’s Communist revolution, went into youth work. Later, during the ideological thaw after Stalin’s death, Mr."Holland came forth as a “revisionist,” a member of the reforming and li-

beralizing Communist faction. Two years after the 1956 outburst in Warsaw that brought the “moderate” Communist Wladyslaw Gomulka, back to power, Holland retreated from his ideological front position. The new watch dogs had not forgotten about Mr. Holland, though. On December 19th plainclothes policemen entered Mr. Holland’s apartment and arrested him. Two days later he was taken back to his apartment, while the police searched his lodgings. While a guard’s attention was elsewhere, Hendrych Holland, victim of a double prosecution, ended his life. The Interior Ministry says it is a military matter and the Defense Ministry says nothing.

Jerusalem Museum Billy Rose's Pet

Billy Ro^e, producer, director and great showman, has a new, pet project. He is venting his energies on the promotion of the Jerusalem Museum of Art and Archaeology, now under construction. He has been hard at work to raise funds to support the big museum. On December 7th, Mr. Rose entertained 80 guests at black tie dinner, netting pledges of $640,• 000 during the evening. He then flew to London to attend a fundraising dinner party given for him by the Israeli ambassador. In addition to the excellent money raising job he is doing, Billy Rose is contributing his own sculpture collection to the museum. Karl Katz, the museum's art dir ector, has appraised the gift at more than )1 million. Billy has also been responsible for persuading Jacques Lipchitz,

the outstanding modern sculptor, to will his entire life work, consisting of about 300 pieces, to the museum. As an extra bonus, Mr. Rose, has arranged for the donation of 200 piaster models made by the late Sir Jacob Epstein, the British sculptor.

Temple Plans Library Of 2,500 Volumes SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (P-O) — A Conservative Congregation here is getting ready to establish library —and a very handsome one indeed. Rabbi Louis Levitsky looks forward to having about 2,500 volumes at Oheb Shalom including: a complete collection of all basic Jewish reference works in English such as both the Jewish Encyclopedia and the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia ; all standard Hebrew texts such as the Hebrew Bible with all of its commentaries, the Mishna, the Talmud, Midrashim, Maimonides, Ibn Gabirol, etc. and all the English translations available for them such as the great Soncino Talmud in English and their 10 volume Midrash in English; dictionaries including the monumental 16 volume exhaustive dictionary of the Hebrew language and the Hebrew 10 volume encyclopedia. Rabbi Levitsky’s library, in short, will include books dealing with every phase of Jewish life — religion, history, philosophy, fiction, belles lettres, sociology and music. It will also include many of the weekly periodicals in English dealing with Jewish life and most of the monthlies and quarterlies.

RABAT, Morocco XP-O) Twenty thousand Jews have been stopped from leaving Morocco this week after political parties attacked the Government for having tolerated “Zionist -inspired emigration”. These Jews, passports in hand, had expected to leave by the end of January. Ony about 2,000 Jews left Morocco in the last three weeks, when all travel restrictions were lifted temporarily. Jewish quarters labeled the halt as a result of a violent campaign in Uie Moroccan political press denouncing the “massive emigration of Jews.” Another cause might be the Leftwing Opposition, who accused the Government of having betrayed the Arab cause by allowing Moroccan Jews to leave for Israel. It is hoped and believed possible that this new clamping down is only temporary and that emigration will be resumed quietly after political skirmishes have calmed down. Evidently, the government can not make its mind up. The point of dispute this time seems to be that officials are not sure where the Jews arc going. If they are trying to get to Europe or North America, everything will be alright; however since 1956 after Morocco gained independence, the government has banned Jewish emigration to Israel.

This would seem to be the end of the strange incident. However, another, more serious facet has come to light, giving a new twist to the case. Before the arrest of Vracaric, Constance judicial authorities had asked the opinion of the Supreme Court and the Federal Attorney-General as to whether they were competent and entitled to detain and charge the Yugoslav resistance fighter. In addition, it has appeared that an international intelligence network was-also involved in the affair. The Swiss authorities had become suspicious of “espionage” on the part of Vracaric as a result of Ills frequent business trips between Yugoslavia, Switzerland and West Germany. The Swiss had even detained Vracaric last year, but had released him for total lack of evidence. Evidently, the Swiss Intelligence Service consulted their secret service pals in Bonn about Vracaric’s travels. The wheels then began to swing into motion, setting off the farce. The Federal German Government has backed swiftly away from the whole business. They eradicated the ludicrous case from the West German judicial records.

As it is, Detective Irven added, “if it were up to me, I’d condemn what’s left.” The bomb expert said whoever prepared the bombs must have spent days preparing them. Also, their skillful placement within the synagogue indicated that the job was done by at least two persons with professional knowledge of such grisly matters.

Swastikas

The bombing follows by only a matter of days daubing of swastikas on the temple. Ironically, the Midwest Fact-Finding Director of the Anti-Defamation League, William Pinsely, had dismissed the swastika incident as a “minor matter. . . in view of the lack of threats or other violence at the

congregation.”

Actually, the congregation had trouble from the beginning. It’s new structure is in an area to which Jewish families have only recently begun moving. Neighbors attempted to block the synagogue’s erection in the first place by haling the congregation’s officers before a zoning tribunal, which did grant permission for the

construction.

Ultra-Orthodox

Rabbi Goldman is Director ef the Chicago Orthodox Rabbinate, which is to the right of traditional Orthodoxy, and does not even recognize the Chicago Board of Rabbis. The congregation enforces segregation of sexes during services. Stunned as he is by the bombing, Rabbi Goldman says flatly that the structure will not be abandoned, but repaired. His wife has already received threatening calls since the bombing, including one in which the caller announced, “we’re going to get all the synagogues on the north side.”
