Genial Jewish Cop Serves as Quaker City ‘Spaceman’
NEW YORK (P-O)—“When I grow up I want to be a cop.” Jewish immigrants on New York’s lower East Side broke into happy grins in the old days when their sons expressed the above sentiment, for to them it seemed the shining brass buttons, the gleaming blue uniform and the twirling “billy” were the very acme of distinction. The boy sometimes changed his objective. Irving Berlin waved a composer’s pencil. Not a billy. Great judges, writers, doctors,

engineers and scientists sprang from the East Side. But just the same, some of the dreamers held to their first love. Switch the scene now to Philadelphia where a “great big hunk of a man” symbolizes all any Jewish lad could have hoped for when he set his heart on the metal star that used to shine on the policeman’s breast. Interviewed by the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent’s own editor Sylvan Kling, the husky, six-foot-two A1 Schwartzman, a Jewish lad from Philly’s “South Side,” grew up to be a cop and a cop on whom thousands of Philadelphians daily depend for safety, security and convenience. Al, in a sense, has become the “eye of a city” and from his throne high above the city’s millions, he barks out directions to the city’s motorists telling them where to avoid traffic bottlenecks, how to expedite their arrival at office or home and what the conditions are on the approaches to the city’s bridges. As the sole helicopter cop of

the Philadelphia Highway Patrol, his voice over Radio Station WPEN is no less familiar than the hero of any TV western and it is awaited with far more interest by the cringing motorist crouched over a sweating wheel, and wondering if he will get to the office in time for that 9:30 conference or home before his wife’s aspic falls and the prime ribs grow cold. In addition to overseeing traffic conditions, he sometimes spots forest fires, lands his copter at the scene of accidents and spies out holly pickers stranded in the snow. He has lectured on traffic safety at school assemblies and bolstered by his famous grin, genially signs autographs for worshipping youngsters who throng the tarmac at North Philadelphia Airport when he lands there, his tour of duty done.

DENVER, Colo. (P-O)—A possible settlement of The dispute between the executive and the professional staff of the National Jewish Hospital here was indicated this week with the announcement that Dr. Sidney Dressier had been re-instated as hospital chief of staff. One of the causes of the dispute, according to hospital authorities, was a disinclination on
