Indianapolis Rabbis Say Judaism Is Open to Negro Converts
Indianapolis’ rabbis agreed that Negroes could become converts to Judaism in a discussion last week. The agreement was part of a discussion Thursday evening, March 23, in the JEA auditorium, when the rabbis considered the subject “Judaism Today and To morrow.” RABBI MAURICE Davis, Rab : bi Harry Sky, and Rabbi Nandor Fruchter gave answers to timely questions pose’d by moderator Julian Freeman. The rabbis were queried on differences in approach among the three wings of Judaism. They examined Judaic philosophy, as well as practice, and rabbinical attitudes on current issues. There was unanimous agreement among the discussants that there could be no racial prohibition regarding potential converts, both for historical and philosophic reasons. They said the sincerity of a person’s motives and his understanding of what is involved were criteria by which he would be accepted for instruction in Judaism. LESS UNANIMOUS agreement ensued on the desirable extent of participation by women in synagogue life, with only Rabbi Sky willing to countenance the admission of a woman to the minyon. None of the panelists seemed to favor the idea of women rabbis. Members of the audience literally sat on the edge of their seats as various controversial

questions were put to the rabbis. The necessity of drawing the discussion to a close was obviously frustrating to an intensely interested audience. THERE WAS time for only a few questions from the floor. Example: What is the Jewish approach to defending the atheist or agnostic so often ostracized in our society? Answer: He should be judged by morality of character, by the righteousness of his actions, and not persecuted for his views. In a closing statement Max Furer, executive director of the JEA, announced that if it weie sufficiently desired, a similar program could be scheduled at a future date, thus consoling the many people who were ready with more questions and who would like to have seen the discussion extended.
