Talk By Rabbi Davis Opens Council Season

The Indianapolis Section of the National Council of Jewish Women will officially open the season’s activities with a luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Broadmoor Country Club. —- Guest speak- " er will be Rabbi Maurice Davis of the Indianapolis H ebrew Congregation. In his talk, called “At the Intersection of Time,” he will describe Rabbi Davis his impressions of his recent trip to Israel. NEW MEMBERS will receive corsages and will be welcomed by the president, Mrs. David Cook. Mrs. Stanley Herman, chairman of the Hebrew University project, will present a check for approximately $900 raised by the Council’s benefit performance at the Avondale Theatre this summer, to Mrs. Walter Lichtenstein, president of Mideastern Region of the Council. The fund is part of the section’s pledge toward building a teacher-training secondary school at the Hebrew University. ■ The year’s plans will be discussed, including the Angel Ball, which will be Council’s only ways - and - means project, and many community service projects, such as Lend-A-Toy, Golden Age Club, Ship-A-Box, LarueCarter project, service to the Armed Forces, and Friendly Visitors. Two new projects are being launched this fall: one at Central State Hospital, called “Armchair Travelers/’ at which volunteers will meet weekly with small groups of patients in the hospital library; and meetings at the Borinstein Home every Wednesday aftejrnoon for programs of music, crafts, games and refreshments. MEMBERS are requested to bring to the opening meeting donations for the Ship-A-Box program (cleansing tissues, soap. Paper towels, pocket combs, or wash cloths) to be sent to kindergartens in Israel schools. Mrs. Allen Dale, chairman, will report °n the program, with plans for this year, and will show slides °f Israel kindergartens. BB to Hear Barr and Bruce Debate Oct. 12

Opposing Congressional candidates for the 11th district House seat will engage in a bare-knuck-les debate Oct. 12, at a dinner meeting of B’nai B’rith Lodge No. 58. The “arena” for the verbal slug-fest between Rep. Joseph W. Barr (Democrat) and Donald C. Bruce (Republican) will be Miller’s Restaurant, Capitol and Market streets. The gong for the start of the debate is set for 8:30 p.m., according to Paul Goldstein, B’nai B’rith program chairman. Thomas Mantel, lodge president, said the debate dinner meeting is open to the general public as well as lodge members. Denver Home To Meet Tuesday The formal opening meeting of the local chapter of the National Home for Asthmatic Children at Denver will be held in the sumptiuous Walnut Room of the Hotel Washington at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. The new look for the fall season will be shown. Mrs. Gray Much is president of the chapter.

Women's Division Names Mrs. Walter Lichtenstein To Head '61 Federation Drive

Mrs. Walter Lichtenstein, one of the Indianapolis Jewish community’s most experienced volunteer workers, has been selected to head the 1961 women’s division drive of the Jewish Welfare Federation. Mrs. Lichtenstein has a long and impressive record in key leadership positions in women’s organizational activities and the Federation’s women’s division. A PAST president of the Indianapolis section of the National Council of Jewish Women and a membei’ of that organization’s national board, she has been prominent in building the Council’s local and national program. She has also been a past president of the Indianapolis chapter of Brandeis University and a national board member of that organization. Mrs. Lichtenstein has been the immediate past president of the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council, a constituent Federation agency, and is widely known for her seryice to organizations promoting intercultural and interfaith work. Mrs. Lichtenstein was one of the founders and was past secretary of the women’s division of the Jewish Welfare Federation. In the most recent fund raising campaign, she served as chairman of the intermediate division. Her diversified interests include active participation in civic, art, and music groups. She is affiliated with the Indiana Crafts and. Artists Group, the Indianapolis symphony, and community drama groups. Mrs. Lichtenstein recently completed an extensive tour of Europe and Israel. As a delegate for the Council of Jewish Women, she attended ceremonies to dedicate the new Hebrew University high school in I s r a e L While in Europe, Mrs. Lichtenstein spent time in conferences with American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee o f f i c i als. In Israel, she observed the various installations which receive support from the local campaign.

Jewish Builder Seminar Speaker Morris Pilgrim, the Jewish builder who has developed integrated housing projects throughout the U.S., will address a dinner meeting of the Indianapolis seminar on housing Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Indiana State Teachers Building. 3 From State Named To Aging Conference Jack Brenn, of Huntington, Dr. Morton Leeds, of Indianapolis, and Dr. Nathan L. Salon, of Ft. Wayne, have been named among Indiana delegates to the White House Conference on Aging. Announcement of the selection was made at the conclusion of the second governor’s conference on aging in Lafayette.

Hadassah to Mark Sukkot With Elaborate Oneg Shabbat

The Indianapolis Chapter of Hadassah will mark Sukkot with an oneg Shabbat at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at the home of Mrs. Jack Goodman. 301 Kessler Blvd., West dr. Kiddush in the Sukkah will be chanted by Mrs. Isaac Sternbaum, followed by an informal program of Israeli song and dance by Mrs. Meyer Bronecke. Mr. Bronecke will accompany her. Nine members who have toured Israel will give impromptu thumbnail sketches of impressions of Israel. They are Mmes. Emanuel Deitz, David Herman, Howard Kahn, Abe Kroot, Abe Kulwin, A. J. Cast for Temple Varsity Show Given

A colorful musical variety show and dance will be sponsored by the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation on Saturday night, Oct. 22. In keeping with election year activities, the show is entitled the Presidential Ball. A talented, hard-working cast, directed by Mrs. Gary Much, will present the 50 minute show in

Temple Yom Kippur Services Telecast The Yom Kippur Night services of The Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation were scheduled to be telecast over Channel 4 WTTV, at 11 p.m. the same night. This is believed to be the first televised broadcast of a Jewish service in the city and the third in the U.S. The project was promoted by the IHC Brotherhood as a means of spreading knowledge of the Jewish religion and dispel ling misbeliefs about Judaism. Robert Gordon, director of the Indianapolis office of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, win narrate the telecast.
