N.Y. Puerto Rfcans Developing Symptoms o f Anti-Semitic Virus

NEW YORK CP-O) — A social worker studying New York’s most recent immigration wave— the Puerto Ricans — came across a totally unexpected development. In Puerto Rico, where only a handful of Jews make their home, there is growing antiSemitism. This has resulted, not because of anything New York Jews do or do not do, or the propaganda of U. S. hate groups, hut is due to sentiments expressed by Puerto Ricans returning to the island from New York or coming back on visits. “What has happened,” the social worker told a Jewish Observer and Middle East Review correspondent, ‘‘is that the Puerto Ricans, pouring into New York, had to find the cheapest housing — slums. Who are the landlords? Mainly Jews. “THE PUERTO Ricans have to get jobs, and the only thing they qualify for — at least at the outset — are bottom-of-the-scale, menial jobs in warehouses, stores, and industry. And who are the bosses? Very frequently Jews. “It is a rough life, and you can see how resentment wells over, and the Jews tend to be blamed for the unhappy situation in which the Puerto Rican finds himself.” Jews, of course, with other New Yorkers, are prominent in efforts to improve the lot of the Puerto Ricans, but the language barrier alone is such a problem

that a young Jewish woman psychiatrist from Buenos Aires, who was visiting New York, found herself flooded with job offers from Jewish family services and agencies co-operating in helping Puerto Rican immigrants. THE JEWISH Observer and Middle East Review correspondent reported that with added thought having to be given to the Puerto Rican problem, Jewish organizations in the human rights field are discovering that NegroJewish relations are alsc posing something more of a problem than they used to. Two issues give the question of Negro-Jewish relations some topicality. In Harlem, Negro rights groups demanded that liquor store owners — many Jewish — should employ Negros — and not restrict themselves to white employees. The threat of a boycott was averted when Jewish and Negro leaders got together and worked out a solution. NEGRO FEELINGS towards Jews, the correspondent wrote, was quite pointedly expressed by certain Negro newspapers. Noting.the American Jewish Congress’ picketing of Woolworth’s over the sit-ins issue, these papers commented editorially that, “it was about time.” There has been close collaboration for more than a decade between the leadership of the Negro and Jewish communities on

BIBLICAL SCENES ALMOST PART OF U.S. GREAT SEAL

WASHINGTON (P-O) Pharaoh drowning in the Red Sea with Moses and the Israelites standing on the shore might have been part of the Great Seal of the United States instead of the American eagle, if this concept by an early American artist, Hamilton by name, had been accepted.

The proposed seal and other historic treasures are part of a special exhibit on Jewish Contributions to American Law in the B’nai B’rith Exhibit Hall which will be officially opened to the public Aug. 28, by Supreme Court Associate Justice Tom Clark.

civil rights, but there is a growing realization that not enough thought and attention has been given to relationships between the Negro and Jewish man-in-the-street. A few months ago The POST and OPINION and other AngloJewish weeklies printed a report by a Philadelphia Jewish communal leader, Nathan L. Edelstein on Negro-Jewish relations in the North. Edelstein noted that there have been “distressing indications of active anti-Semitism among Northern Negroes and seemingly deliberate efforts to fan its flames by some of their leaders. “STORIES AND editorials in Negro newspapers have implied that Jews are hostile to Negro rights. Some powerful figures, including Negro politicians, have attributed to Jews much of the existing discrimination against Jews,” Edelstein wrote in his -report. Analyzing the cause? of Nego anti-Semitism, Edelstein noted that “contact between Negroes and Jews occurs most frequently along a front peculiarly productive o f friction. The ordinary Negro knows the Jew as a landlord, or rent collector, as an employer, or as a retail shopkeeper whose extension of credit often places the Negro in the status of debtor.”
