Latter-Day Elaier Gantrys Still Out To Save the Jews
NEW YORK (P-O) — Jews are Still sought after. About six months ago, the Lutherans announced a stepped-up drive to convert American Jews, i Formerly the main work in this field was done by the American Board of Missions to the Jews, a Baptist-oriented organizations with an annual budget of $400,000. The 1924 charter of the missionary group proclaims the belief "in the lost condition of every human being, whether Jew or Gentile, who does not accecpt salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, and, therefore, in the necessity of presenting the Gospel to the Jews.” THE HEADQUARTERS of the group is a six-story building in

Manhatten which also has a Palestine Museum, the Reconstructionist magazine reports. In the chapel, about 50 Jewish converts gather every Sunday. Success is greater than the attendance would indicate, as the American Board passes on the proselyte to the fundamentalist church nearest his home. The movement was founded by Leopold Cohn, a former Orthodox rabbi, who moved from Hungary to the U. S. in the latter part of the 19th century. His son and successor, Joseph Hoffman Cohn, died in 1953. His record sermons still form the mainstay of the movement’s weekly broadcast — “Chosen People Broadcast” — heard over 20 stations in the U. S. and seven in Canada. Several publications are distributed in English and Yiddish. THE MONEY for all these activities is raised by solicitations in fundamentalist churches throughout the U. S. and collecting boxes are stationed in Sunday Schools and homes. One subsidiary activity is the maintenance of the Machpelah cemetery for Jewish converts; the official description states: "This removes the worry from the older Jewish people who have accepted Christ and have thereby forfeited their right to burial in a Jewish cemetery.” Catholic missionaries tend to be more discreet and circumspect, Reconstructionist reports. Nevertheless, there is a conspicuous segment of Jewish converts in the American Catholic Church. One priest is quoted who person-

ally knows of 1,300 Jewish converts, including 38 priests, 13 brothers and 32 nuns. ONE SUCH convert is Father John Oesterreicher, director of the nstitute of Judeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University in Newark. This sponsors research projects into the Jewish backgrounds of Christianity and publishes the annual “The Bridge” containing articles by Catholic scholars hoping for a Jewish-Catholic dialogue on the ideas which unite and divide the two religions Father Oesterreicher Is an Austrian refugee, formerly active in the Zionist movement, who says he was greatly influenced by an anthology of Jesus’ sayings compiled by Houston Stewart Chamberlain — of all people. THE Reconstructionist article on Missions to American Jewry concludes with a quotation by the distinguished theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr: “Missionary activity among Jews is wrong because the two faiths, despite differences, are sufficiently alike for the Jew to find God more easily in terms of his own religious heritage than by subject ing himself to the hazards of guilt feelings involved in conver-
sion.”

TEL AVIV (P-O) — Housewives, are you having trouble with your maids? Do you think you’re overpaying them? Here’s the situation in Israel: The going wage for maids in Tel Aviv is between 41 and 50 cents an hour. An additional 10 to 15 per cent is thrown in for laundering, ironing, cleaning after a whitewash or paint job. This will bring the top rate up to about 58 cents per hour. MANY OF the women looking for jobs as domestics are of Yeminite or “oriental” origin who come to look for work in Tel Aviv. Most of them come from the towns and villages around Tel Aviv The majority are between 30 and 40. In June, the Israeli Employment Service opened up a temporary agency for domestic workers in Tel Aviv from the list of unskilled workers in the Labor Exchange, a report in the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent
stated.
IT HAS BEEN customary for women looking for work to congregate in Allenby Road, waiting for someone to hire them. A housewife coming to look for a maid there is usually fallen on by a dozen women clamoring for a job. This has brought about the creation of private agencies who have notoriously exploited such women, requesting as high , as 15 per cent commissions for placements, while black market exchanges developed for other purposes. DESPITE THE creation of the
official Labor Exchange, the freebooting operations in this labor market will not be eliminated, the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent report predicted. Most women find work through personal recommendation, and a number still prefer to ring doorbells in a house to house canvass for a job. The Israeli Labor Employment Service is now offering these domestics courses in house-clean-ing, laundering, ironing, use of various materials and equipment and elementary lessons in cook-
ery.
