Theater-ln-The-Woods Names Kaufman Playwriting Winner

Martin Kaufman, 127 E. 48th st., was awarded first place in the Theater-in-the-Woods playwriting contest for his play, “The Mandate.” The contest, sponsored by the Indianapolis Jewish community center’s dramatic group, was open to all residents of the state who had original play manuscripts. “THE MANDATE,” one of Kaufman’s earlier plays, was written when he came out of the army in late 1949 and early 1950. It is a story of Israel before it became a nation and won its independence and of the men who worked in the underground to bring refugees into the country through the British blockade. Auditions, unlike other Theat-er-in-the-Woods plays, will be open to the public. They are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evening, August 8 and 9, announced director Mary Wildhack Hansen. The play opens on Wednesday night, September 14 at the The-ater-in-the-Woods, 6701 Hoover Road. Two additional perform-

ances are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18. Contest judges were Thomas Adkins of Butler University and Charles Staff of the Indianapolis News. The award of $50 will be presented to the author at one of the performances of the current production, Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” on Aug. 6, 7, 10, 13, and 14. KAUFMAN WAS born and spent a good part of his life in New York City, and received his degree from New York University after World War II. He :s currently the office manager of Spector Motor Freight. Mrs. Roger Kahn Shoots Low Gross Score of 91 Mrs. Roger Kahn had a low gross score of 91 at the Broadmoor country club guest day golf tournament. Other gross scores were Mrs. Joe Rothbard 92 and Joan Atlas 98. Low net v scores were: Jennie Rauh 81, Mrs. Robert Simon and Mrs. Ben Domont 82 each and Mrs. David Gold 85.
