Have you ever met a teenager from a far away country who could speak to you in several different languages? Six of us had the experience of spending an evening with two American field service foreign exchange students while we were saUboating out at Geist reservor. Peika is a tall blond boy from Hellesinki, Finland. He was the guest of Tom Schloss, when the tour of exchange students stopped in Indianapolis. Nuri is a dark charming guy from Istanbul, Turkey. THE AFS sponsors foreign exchange students in America and sends our students abroad. The students who come here spend a year in a public high school and climax their stay by a tour of the Unites States. While they are in school they live with an American family. Peika, who is 18, is typical of the American image of the Scandinavian, with his fair hair and blue eyes. Peika will be in the twelth grade when he gets back to Finland. There the school system is extremely different compared to ours. Somewhere in the elementary grades a child takes a test. If he passes, he may go on to high school. If not, he learns a trade. Peika hopes to go to the University of Hellesinki where he will study technology. His father is a professor at the Hellesinki Institute of Technology.
The family has a small European car which gets about thirty miles to the gallon of gas. But gas is more expensive in Finland, costing about 70 cents a gallon. IN FINLAND the kids date at a later age than we do in the U. S. They do about the same things we do, Peika said, although they do not have drivein restaurants. We asked Peika if he thought that U. S. teenagers were wild and immature. He said, yes, we were more wild but not too much. It was just that we got to do things at an earlierage than the majority of European children. “You’re good kids,” he smiled. Nuri had lovely manners and a quiet dignity. He was typically American in that he could tell a good story. The customs of Niiri’s country differ greatly from ours. According to him, parents do not like their children to date until they are of college age. However it seems that in Turkey it is no harder for teenagers to meet each other than here in the US or anywhere else. PEIKA spoke Finnish, Swedish, and English. Nuri spoke Turkish, German, an English. I learned in English class that people don’t like to have morals written at the end of stories, but the above is living proof of one that many have talked and written about for ever-so-long; that people are the same everywhere.
