Overnight Stardom Haya Harareet skyrocketed to stardom’ overnight when she jQayed Esther in the Academy Award winning picture - “Benlyur.” She won the role in way reminiscent of an unlikely fiction story. She met Hollywood director, William Wyler briefly at the Cannes Film Festival. One year later, he remembered her and had her screen tested. Wyler later was asked what made Haya stand out in his mind. He said: “I recalled especially the vehemence with which she replied to a comment of mine. Upon being introduced, I had said quite caoally that I had always wanted to visit Israel. This young wi nan’s eyes flashed and she remarked pleasantly, but quite fiiilly, that she was tired of hearing that. She told me that evK^yone always said that he would like to visit Israel but thiu no one ever did. It was the manner in which she made this statement that impressed me.”
Farm Girl
Lovely brown-eyed Elana Eden like Haya Harareet achieved stardom with one film. She played the leading role in “The Story of Ruth” which is currently playing the nation’s movie houses. Before coming to Hollywood less than a year ago, she lived on the family farm in the little town of Bat Yam hard by the ancient port of Jaffa in Israel. Her father is a landscape gardener. Elana has a brother, Moti, 26, who is a .merchant mariner and a sister, Tamar, 23, who is married to a saerchant marine^
A Telephone Call When Ziva Rodann recently called Haifa via transAtlantic telephone, all her mother could tell her was to be careful when crossing the streets. Always look both ways, her mother said.
Rising Star Diane Doronne got her big break when she took the lead in the “Diary of Anne Frank” on Broadway when Susan Strassberg stepped down. She is the daughter of one of the pioneers of the Habimah theatre in Tel Aviv. She has appeared in the Shakespeare festival in Stratford, Conn. She has also appeared in network television dramas.
Elana Eden plays the role of Ruth, the first recorded convert to Judaism (she was an alien Moabite, the widow of a Judean). She was also the source of the oft-quoted Biblical passage (Ruth 1:16): “For where you go, I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Elana’s education consisted of religious school, public high school, residence for a time on a kibbutz community, and the conclusion of her high school studies at the Habima drama school
An Israel Export Item An individualist type of person, Yardena, has appeared in such Hollywood films as “The Best of Everything” and "The Rat Race.” She is a veteran of the Habima Theatre in Tel Aviv. She was a member of a radio dramatic group on Kol Israel, Israel’s national radio for three years.
