ATLANTIC CITY" .(P-O —The birthrate of American Jews is far below that of Protestants and Catholics, according to a survey reported by Dr. Joshua A Fish m an, director of research at the Albert M. Greenfield Center for Human Relations of the University of Pennsylvania. Speaking at the annual convention of the national conference of the Jewish Communal Service in Atlantic City, Fishman reported that there are proportionately fewer Jews under 35 years of age than among Protestants and Catholics. Among Jews, there has been a "disturbingly low fertility even in the period of the baby boom and regardless of occupa tional dizerences.” According to Fishman, Jewish fertility is only 79 per cent of the national average. New Orleans Gets Mixed Seating NEW ORLEANS (P-O)—New Orleans in the past two weeks has suddenly blossomed forth with two mixed seating congregations. The dissident group of Congregation Chevra Phillin has purchased for itself an abandoned public school and is making ready for the services of the high holidays in the fall. This is the congregation which has gone to court a number of times and has failed to win the right to change to mixed seating. Another congregation, Anshe Sfard, has within the last few days voted for mixed seating also, beginning in the fall at the request and insistance of some of its leading wealthy members. This latter congregation was until now very powerful stronghold of traditional Orthodoxy.
