World Must Mot Let

Genocide Happen Again

• Editor Jewish POST and OPINION I read with interest Rev. John Haynes Holmes brilliant sermon “Christianity’s Debt to Judaism” and I would like to make the following observations: That the Jewish people do not desire credit for their theological contributions to civilization, but by the same token they do not desire to be condemned for it. The fact is that the Jewish people have not recently migrated from some distant planet. History records that from the dawn of civilization the Jews fought and died on every, battle field of the world and when permitted made proportionate contributions in all fields such as commerce, art, science as well as theology, and desire no particular credit

for doing so.

During the past centuries whenever a ruthless leader came to power who discriminated against and persecuted the Jewish people they would wander to other lands for no immigratoin barriers stood in their way. When a tyrant arose to persecute them it was possible for Jews to escape. In recent years with. the advent of immigration barriers it was impossible to escape and as a result the Jewish people lost 6 million of its number, men, women and children for no other reason than that they were Jews. Christian civilization cannot claim ignorance because Hitler gave them prior notice of his intent, but civilization remained passive during the actual holo caust, thus making the nations of the world accessories to the fact. They stood and did nohting to aid in the escape by lowering the immigration barriers. The fact is that the Jews have a valid claim against civilized na tions on two accounts; one, jus tice and humanity; two, equity.

On the basis of humanitysuch people when a disaster occuis such as, earthquake, famine, flood, etc. we send succoi to relieve suffering. If a ship is in distress on the high seas the law of humanity is to stand by and rescue--immigration barriers are suspended. This was not exercised in our behalf during the Hitler uprising. As to equity, in a court of law if property is taken from an individual the law usually provided for restitution and damages. The Jewish people want no restitution or damages foi its 6 million, be cause damages cannot be pro vided for those 6 million lost souls What can be don is to establish a safeguard against the repetition of genocide in the fu-

ture.

• Editor Jewish POST and OPINION My attention was drawn- to your article in the issue of your paper of April 29, charging that the Jewish Telegraphic Agency deliberately abstained from pub lishing the letter addressed by Irving Kane, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, to members of his board, in connection with the recent reorganization of the American section of the Jewish Agency. Mr. Kane’s letter was a private and privileged communication and was not designed for publication and was not released for publication. Regardless of the practice that others may follow in a distorted notion of their journalistic function, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency does not vio B'NAI TORAH CONFIRM SIX ON SUNDAY, MAY 2 Congregation B’nai T o r a h’s ninth confirmation services will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, May

late privacy by publishing private communications. The head of a Jewish orgam zation should be able to confer privately with his colleagues on matters of import to the community without having to fear unauthorized and, in fact, illicit publication of his communica tions. We do not know the source from which you obtained the document. In publishing this pri vate document the National Jew ish POST and OPINION has in my opinion, acted in violation of the accepted code of journalistic ethics. If Mr. Kane desires a public ex pression of his views and wishes to make the contents of his letter public or to embody its views in a statement, the JTA will un hesitatingly and unquestioningly give circulation to his statement without regard to the views ex pressed in that statement. There are no limitations imposed by external or internal censorship on JTA’s selection and

treatment of news. JTA can and will publish all the legitimate news it collects, but it will not, for the sake of a headline, violate confidences or personal privilege by broadcasting private communications. BORIS SMOLAR, Editor-in-Chief Jewish Telegraphic Agency This is the strangest account of how a newspaper or a news service limits itself to getting its news only to official handouts we've ever read. Why have reporters all oyer the world and Washington Bureaus, etc., etc., since all one lias' to do is to wait for a news release.

Incidentally, the tetter by Irving Kane is not a personal one, but was sent out to many people throughout the U. S. If Mr. Smolar would take the trouble to ask Mr. Kane we’re sure he’d get permission to use the letter’s contents, but if he’s going to wait for Mr. Kane to call him, that might take a long time.—G.M.C.
