Speaking of names: the Jerusalem Post reports that a man named Loew, which is German for lion, received a letter from an acquaintance who had forgotten his name and addressed it to Baer. The Israel post office straightened out the animals and delivered the letter. Another letter erroneously addressed to Mr. Wolf likewise reached Loew, who is thinking of opening a private
zoo.
The Jerusalem lawyer who sued the public bus line for damages, because a late bus had made him miss part of a concert, won an apology from the company. The company also made a contribution to the Red Magen David upon settlement of the case. Jerusalem’s buses now run on Last year Tel Aviv offered special congratulations and a cash gift of 100 Israel Pounds on performance of mixed marriage on Lag B’Omer. But the "intermarriage” had to be between members of different Jewish communities, thus accelerating integration between so-called Eastern and Western Jews. Hitchhiking is not frowned upon in Israel. To the contrary. Drivers of government vehicles

have received instructions from the Civil Service Commission that they must give lifts to hitchhikers. The cars are covered by insurance. Giving lifts is a lesson in good citizenship, the Commission said. Who is a Jew? Avraham Shmueloff was born a Jew, but turned Catholic and later became a priest. His identity card reads: “Jew, of the Christian faith.” Israel’s courts have ruled that if a taxpayer appears to be living on a scale above his declared income, the tax authorities are within their rights in assessing him at whatever income they deem necessary for maintenance of his family. The burden of proof contrariwise is upon the taxpayer. He is presumed to be earning, unless he can prove
otherwise.
Tel Aviv has had a rash of new restaurants bearing such names as "Paris,” "New York,” “California,” etc. The city fathers have protested, and have urged that names of HebrewIsraeli origin should be preferred. The biggest news hoax in recent Israel history was a front page report in Haaretz that Russia violipist David Oistrakh and his accompanist had arrived for a series of recitals. The ensuing demand for tickets swamped the box office and the switchboards —until it was revealed that the story had been phoned to the city desk by a man representing himself as the music editor. The perpetrator was never caught. South Africa’s Chief Rabbi cites Bible to endorse the UJA drive in that country. The book of Second Chronicles, written in the Diaspora, coneludles: "Whosoever there is among you of all His people, the Lord his God be with him, let him go up.” The same words appear in Ezra 1, 3-4, but with the following significant addition: "And whosoever is left in any place where he sojourneth,” should help with silver and with gold “for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.” The book of Ezra was written in Palestine!

One more Bible quotation, from the Jewish Chronicle. Janus Cohen of England points to the first after-dinner speech recording in Jewish history. It was delivered by one of the visiting angels after dining at Abraham’s table. He said: "I will certainly return unto thee when the season cometh round; and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.” The speech was distinguished by the three requisites of a model afterdinner oration: it was brief; it was pregnant with promise; and it was mirth-provoking, for a couple of verses later it is reported: "And Sarah laughed. . .”

Ecstatic Joy Abounds At Hassidic Wedding
By RACHEL A. RABINOWICZ Oh, how they danced at the Munkaczer wedding. Danced, danced, danced until the walls shook and the screens fell down. Danced, danced, danced until every man and boy had been magnet-drawn into the throbbing throng while the women clapped their hands and tapped their feet as they clambered precariously on other chairs and tables to watch. “When will be the redemption?” came the question in chorus as they rocked from side to side. “Oi. let the Messiah come!” Eyes closed and faces uptilted ; expressions ecstatic, shoulder to shoulder and arm in arm, linked by common joy and uncommon camaraderie, they formed a wild and winding chain around the hall. The sparks flew from the flushed cheeks of the little capotecoated lads and the flying boots of their greybearded grandsires. And as they swayed the band played on and on, vigorous, vibrant, half-hypnotic in exotic and inexorable rhythm. “Sha! Sha!” The music faded abruptly. The Rebbe put his arm around the bridegroom, his son and in intimate spiraling circles the Hassidim danced once more to their own mystical melody, wordless, yet, meaningful, mindintoxicating. So, in tireless, timeless steps, they danced away the night. THIS REJOICING had been preceded by scenes of colorful near chaos wrought by over-en-thusiastic guests. By 10:35, precisely some 800 men and women and children had gathered in the hall, segregated by white satinribbon cordons. Above the blue velvet canopy set up upon the stage, the roof-window had been opened to permit a glimpse oi star-lit sky. Hassidim packed the stage in overlapping lines, crowding so closely that the fragile foliage and flower laden Huppah threatened to overturn at any moment (although it did not ac tually carry out this threat until after the ceremony and the safe departure of the bride and groom). Excitement rose to a climax with the entry of the pale young

bridegroom and his entourage, his father and a galaxy of rabbis each with fur-fringed headgear, outstanding like a host of halos. Then with due drama came the bride, her lady escorts bearing lighted tapers. Seven times thq bride completed the traditional circuits round the groom, then the Satmar Rebbe, Grand Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, recited the blessings in his frail high voice. And suddenly the room was a joyful gabble of Yiddish, Hebrew, Hun* garian and Polish above the triumphant and tumultuous music. “Mazzeltov, Mazzeltov!” “You should see simehas by your chilren!” “May you soon lead your son, daughter, grandchild beneath the huppah!” SLOWLY they gathered round the dinner tables. Between the courses they danced, of course. And during the courses the badchan, the pester, regaled the assembly with quip and anecdote in intricate versified monologue. This was the wedding of David Rabinowicz. son of the Munkaczer Rebbe, a rabbi in Sao Paulo, to Dolly Spitz, a daughter of a Bunkaczer Hassid. And from as far away as California and Canada, Hassidim had gathered to celebrate this union. The' final mitzva tensel, the handkerchief dance between the bride and groom, was applauded by exhausted but exuberant Hassidim. Such is the fire this historic dynasty has kindled. Exclaimed a Hassid passionately as he rushed towards the subway: “I would give my right hand for Munkacz.”
