CONSIDER MAIMONIDES' TIGHT STEPS OF CHARITY 1 ASKS ROTHBAUM
By JVIAUREL ROTHBAUM The spirit of philanthropy is woven into the fabric of Jewish life. A sense of justice, of mercy, and of compassion has sustained' Jewish life through all generations. The Jewish Welfare Feder ation, through your generous gifts in the past, supports 65 agencies which provide a wide range of services to Jews the world
over.
When your gift help a
needy child or a despairing family .. . when your gift provides a home for an aging person who has no one to turn to , when your gift brings medical aid to the sick . . . you are sharing in the highest levels of human serv-
ice.
THE QUESTION, “How much should I give?” always poses a
Rothbaum
problem. What measure can be used to determine this question In light of this question, consider Moses Maimonides’ “Eighi Steps of Charity.” • The first and lowest degree is to give — but with reluctance or regret. This is the gift of the hand, but not of the heart. • The second is to give cheer fully, but not proportionately to the distress of the sufferer. • The third is to give cheerfully and proportionately, but not until we are solicited. • The fourth is to give cheerfully, proportionately, and even unsolicited; but to put it in the poor man’s hand, thereby exciting in him the painful emotion of shame. • The fifth is to give charity in such a way that the distressed may receive the bounty and know their benefactor, without their being known to him. • The sixth, which rises still higher, is to know the objects

of our bounty, but remain unknown to them. • The seventh is still more mer itorious, namely, to bestow chaxity in such a way that the ben efactor may not know the relieved persons, nor they the name of their benefactor. • Lastly, the eighth and most meritorious of all, is to anticipate charity by preventing poverty; namely, to assist the re duced brother, either by a considerable gift, or a loan of mone>. or by teaching him a trade, or by putting him in a way of business, so that he may earn an honest livelihood; and not be forced to the dreadful alternative of holding up his hand for charity.” ’ Tins YEAR, the Federation hopes to raise $600,000. Your gift to the Federation can make the difference. For instance: . . . $15 will enable a Jewish chaplain to supply the religiousneeds of 10 American service men for a month. . . . $20 will enable a Jewishagency to house an immigrant family for half a month. . . . $25 will care for a child in a nursery in Israel or North Africa for two months. To millions of people in Indianapolis, the United States, and all over the world, your pledge can make the difference. It can actually meet human needs and the need is great LET’S CONSIDER your pledge in another light — in terms of masses — masses of needy people. Of the 60,000 immigrants in Israel still waiting for help in re settlement, $35,000 will move only 10 — 10 families among thousands who have been waiting for years — out of shameful ma’abarot shanties and into modest, decent housing units. There is much to be done in
1960, and the Federation asks for your whole hearted suppor’ - . A small sacrifice on your part can mean the difference between life and death to an undernour ished child It can mean a month’s car-e and training to help
