SILVERSTEIN SCORES NEW SPACE SUCCESS

WASHINGTON (P-O) — As di rector of space flight programs at the Space Administration, Dr Abe Silversteih is in charge of planning space flights, from unmanned and manned satellites to probes deep in i n terplanetary space. The 51-year-old s c i e n tist '^an be gruff, impatient with mediocrity, and dogmatic in the hard • driving honesty he ap proaches every Silverstein person and problem. His remarkably retentive mind incisively grasps technical problems. He is one of the few authentic geniuses not in terms of invention and discovery but in his breadth of comprehension of technical matters and his re markable facility for getting down to the fundamentals in any field he tackles. Silverstein has been driving himself at a 12-hour-a-day, 6-day-a-week pace that causes concern among his colleagues for his health. His latest fantastic success is

the new U. S. weather satellite that is sending weather signals back to U. S. scientists.

Tourist Has Confidence In Israelis PHILADEPHIA (P-O) — The Philadelphia Jewish Exponent relays the story about the two Americans who were on their first visit to Israel Naturally, they wanted to see as much as possible in their brief visit, including the cultural life of the country. One night they went to see a comedy produced by the Habima Theatre. During the performance, one of the tourists joined the audience in their laughter. The other sat quietly, not understanding a word that was being said. After the show, the nonlaughter said to his friend, “I don't get it. You were laughing every time the audience laughed, and you don't know any more Hebrew than I do, which is nothing. How come ’■ “You’re right,” was the answer, “I don't know any Hebrew — but I have such confidence in these people.”

Religious Items Campaign Gradually Moves Upward

The religious items drive conducted by The POST and OPINION to provide tephillin and Sifrei Toras for Jews in Israel colonies and behind the Iron Curtrain continued to move slowly. THE TOTAL this week stood* at $463.28, an increase of under $100 from the total announced several weeks ago. The drive was Inaugurated after requests from the Israel Minister of Religions, Jacob Y. Toledano, who asked for gifts to supply the religious items to the new colonies which have no Toras for their services. AT THE same time the Federation of Czechoslovakian Jews called upon generous Jews to aid in providing tephillin and Toras for Jews behind the Iron Curtain where because of government policies no religious items were available. Two $20.00 gifts, one from Mrs. S. B. Shapiro of Montreal and the other from Temple Israel in

Great Neck led the contributions

this week.

ALL GIFTS will be acknowledged in The POST and OPIN ION. Ten dollars buys a pair of tephillin, although a good used pair of tephillin will be most acceptable. These should be pack aged tightly and shipped to The Religious Item Campaign, National Jewish POST and OPINION, 84 Fifth Ave., New York. Cash gifts should come to the Indianapolis office, P. O. Box 1633, Indianapolis, Ind. Morris Rosen, 147 Stevens Ave., Mt. Vernon, N. Y., who secured two Toras in answer to Rabbi Toledano’s plea, has written to suggest that congregations in the U. S. who have surplus Toras may wish to send them as part of the campaign of the P-O. Such gifts will be very welcome. Those who wish to purchase a Sefer Tora should send $300, which although only one-third of the market price, is the figure for which they can be purchased as part of the current campaign.
