Another kind of image which the matzohs might conjure up for some is the diversity of opinion among those who call themselves Zionists, non-Zionists and anti-Zionists. In modern times, of course, we
might say that the three matzohs stand for Orthodox Jew, tlv Conservative Jew and the Re-
fonn Jew.
Recalling the groupings of the past, the remarkable thing is noi that there were varieties of Jew ish expression. Unanimity of flunking would be inconsistent with the essentially rational ana non-hierarchicai nature of Ju daism. What is remarkable is the
fact that only rarely did these divergences lead to unbridgab^*schisms. The descendants of the priest, assistant priests, and the ordinary Israelites of old are now united in worship. A few genet ations ago the feeling between East European Jews and German Jews ran high and acute; but today these differences are more often subjects of jest than ol serious concern, ur Jewish comedians get laughs out of one-timt feuds, as they kid that the mar r'iage between the offspring of German and Russian Jews is “really intermarriage.” -
