Silverman of Nashville, Tenn., it has been announced. MAYERBERG, spiritual leader of B’nai Jehudah for 32 years, expressed delight with the choice. Silverman, 45, is now rabbi of Congregation Ohabai Sholom in Nashville, a position he has held since 1950. Nearly 40 rabbis were considered for the B’nai Jehudah po-
.dtion.
During Rabbi Mayerberg’s eadership, the congregation here lias grown in membership from .“500 to 1,400 families with a religious school enrollment of more lhan 1,000 children. THE KANSAS City Star commented editorially on Mayernerg’s retirement. ’“In the temple,” it said, “he has been a builder and an inspiration. In the community, he has often stood
ruption or destroy good government, he has been a voice that could not be turned off. He has gone into the lion’s den and asked questions that demanded answers.” Dr. Mayerberg spearheaded a civic crusade which led to overthrow in 1940 of boss government in Kansas City. More recently, he has challenged a trend toward partisan politics in City Hall. Upon retirement he will become rabbi emeritus of B’nai Jehudah.

Write To Relatives In Russia Before A Visit-Levine By JANE KINDERLEHRER ALLENTOWN, Pa. (P-O) — “Write to your relatives in Rus sia before you try to visit them,” Irving R. Levine, NBC correspondent formerly stationed in Moscow, said here. “Some Jews in Russia,” he said, “refuse to see their American relatives for fear of incurring some form of disciplinary action.” JEWS IN Russia hide their interest in the State of Israel for the same reason — fear of reprisal which takes many invidious forms fi*om loss of job to banishment to forced labor camps in Siberia. There is very little that American Jews or Amei'ican Jevyish organizations can do to alleviate the plight of the Russian Jew. Levine told Th e POST and OPIN ION, except to read everything that is written about them, judge their needs by reading between the lines and supplying them inconspicuously through people who are traveling there. For instance, there is a great need for prayer books which could be brought in a few at a time by tourists rather than sent in bulk shipment which would attract too much attention and cause embarrassment.
Klutznick Proposes Capital Be Found To Establish Strong Jewish Press
CHICAGO, HI (P-O) — A recommendation that a meeting of publishers of Anglo-Jewish papers and "15 or 20 American Jews who are free of organizational ties and who may be pre pared to risk some capital “to explore the problem of a vital national Jewish publication was made here this week. Philip Klutznick, chairman of the PresiKlutznick dents Conference, made the proposal in The Sentinel, local Anglo-Jewish paper.
AFTER EXPRESSING amazement at “the much smaller community of the United Kingdom (which) produces and supports a London Jewish Chronicle of genuine merit,” Klutznick wrote that American Jewry “with all of our superior numbers and vastly greater resources have never been able to approach this standard.” “I am convinced,” the former president of the B’nai B’rith, asserted, “that this problem calls for a more direct approach. It not only involves the future of the American Jewish community, but it also concerns sound business principles.” HE CONCLUDED that “the

nick was charged in The Jewish News here with criticizing the Anglo-Jewish press and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. PHILIP SLOMOVITZ, dean of the Anglo-Jewish press and publisher of The Jewish News, accused Klutznick of doing “a disservice when he brushes away the fact of the existence of an English-Jewish press. Challenging the proposal made by Klutznick in The Sentinel of Chicago, Slomovitz asserted that "If there is to be a Jewish press free from pressures and in a position to educate the American Jewish community, it can not depend upon 'capital risks’ from donors. It needs the concern of Jewry, the devotion of a dedicated constituency.” . .DEFENDING the JTA, Slomovitz plead for “the wholehearted support of American Jewry because without it the only link between the Jewries of the world
means of serving Jewry newswise would be ended.” Using strong terms, Klutznick asked: “As president of B’nai B’rith, as chairman of the Presidents’ Conference that speaks in behalf of the major Jewish organizations in America, what sue cess can Klutznick show in having enrolled genuine Jewish interest in supporting a greatlyneeded Jewish press? Slomovitz furnished his own reply, “Our belief is that the an-

“We were trapped in the ivilderness 70 miles from Times Square”
“My father-in-law and I were far out on Long Island. Somehow I made a wrong turn, and we ended up stuck in soft sand on a back road. Dad is a severe diabetic, so I was afraid to leave him alone. But he had to have food to maintain his insuhn-sugar balance. After waiting helplessly for some time I decided I must go after assistance. Just then, from nowhere, a telephone truck appeared. The men gave us water, helped me free the car and got us safely back on the main road. A little incident, to be sure, but it convinced me that even in this modem, mechanized world there is still no substitute for simple friendliness and helpfulness.”
