Rabbinical Council Sermons Higher in Calibre This Year
Burstein
manual of holiday and SABBATH SERMONS, edited by P. H. Singer, $6.50 (Rabbinical Council Press). The Council continues to supply rabbis of all groups with a remarkable wealth of ideas for a year of sermonizing, written by a most able corps of American Orthodox rabbis. Pool, Jung, Rackman, Chavel, H o 11 a n der, S h a r f m an, Adams, and other well known names,
appear.
Since the calibre of the discourses is more uniformly high than in previous collections, none of the sermonizers need be specially named from this volume. As previously, there are talks for special occasions and a commendable addendum of sermonettes for every sidra. Perhaps the major theme is the citation from Israel Salanter: "It is a far greater feat to live as a Jew than die as a Jew.” But there are too many unedited phrases like Orentlicher’s “This has become a rat-race life of existence.” The format of the series remains undistinguished and the editing virtually undistinguishable. Editors should be appointed for editorial ability, and not as an "honor.” The book is dedicated to Chief Rabbi Isaac Nis-
sim; it contains his address at the dedication of Heihal Shelomo. MARGIN FOR TRIUMPH, by Joseph I. Singer, $5.50 (Bloch). “The Torah,” says Rabbi Singer, “is the margin for triumph, changing the minus of life into a plus.” On this premise he has based the impressive sermons gathered into his first book. They cover the holidays, special Sabbaths, and the portions of Genesis and Exodus. They combine piety and learning with excellently chosen quotations from Hebraic Literature and unusually apt anecdotes. An addition to Jewish homiletic writing that is valuable to fellow rabbis and laymen both, though marred by inadequate editing, in such matters as capitalization and transliteration, “b’shvat” for “bi’shvat,” “Shevuous” for “Shavuos,” and similar solecism. Still, enjoyable, informative, and inspiring reading. LIVING HEBREW, $9.95 (Crown
Publishers).
The most recent and quite possibly the best, of the admirable Crown Living Language courses, is the modern Hebrew lessons — 40 of them on four two-sided, long-playing, highfidelity records, spoken by native Israelis — employing the methods so successfully developed by the United States under martial impact. Samuel Steinberg’s “Common
Peace Rumors With Arabs Heard From Several Sources
NEW YORK (NJP)—Rumors of possible peace overtures by the Arabs have still elicited very little interest in the diplomatic world who are inclined to doubt their authenticity, but the rumors nevertheless still persist. THE JEWISH Chronicle of London in a news story from Ottowa, Canada, reported Sidney Smith, Canadian Minister of External Affairs, as telling Parliament on his return from the UN session that he had heard that the Arab states were prepared to discuss peace with Israel. The New York Times had a more specific version of the same theme. It reported from the United Nations that the
United Arab Republic was ready to join the big powers and other Arab states and Israel in a declaration pledging to observe the principles of non-aggression and non-intervention in the area. FROM ISRAEL, the correspondent of The POST and OPINION reported that Golda Meir on her recent visit to Rome suggested that Italy be the mediator for a meeting between BenGurion and Nasser.

Usage Dictionai'y and Conversation Manual” (extra copies for group use cost but $1.50 each) are as near perfection as either pedagogue or learner could hope for. The basic Hebrew words are marked; only basic meanings are supplied; expressions and forms are added. Sonic variations are indicated through the use of different voices. One learns by listening; instructions are faultless. If more grammar is desired, a syntactical section is appended. The set, let us say, is sof hai — the living end. A PREFACE TO JUDAISM AND SCIENCE, by Ely E. Pilchik and Rav A. Soloff (Temple Bnai Jeshurun, Newark). Here are eight enlightening discourses on the history of science, from the Egyptians to the Arabs, which portray the “modern” knowledge of the ancients and medievalists, and the ability of Judaism at all times to remain in accord with every new advance in research and learning. Recommended for its novel subject matter and approach to all Jewish preachers. STUDIES IN BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, series by Andre Parrot, $2.75 each (Philosophical Library). A most facile and felicitous means of learning what has been discovered about the Bible and Bible times is this series of monographs on archaeology. In small volumes each subject is fully treated, with history, discovery, illustrations, notes, chronology, and bibliography. The earliest titles, already mentioned in this column, were “Discovering Buried Worlds,” and “The Flood and

Though Prof. Parrot h<ss the to-be-expected Christian orientation, his books can be commended to readers of all faiths, for unusual interest and readily imbibed information. ABRAHAM BURSTEIN
