ing is taking place in every home. The “best" china and crystal, infrequently used during the informal summer entertaining, have to be made sparklingly clean. The linen closet is checked over, and the best damask cloths, or any lovely favorite, is freshened up or re-laundered so that it may grace the holiday table. the time of our beautiful High Holy Days, and the hostess wants her table to be at its best. Some goodies may be baked ahead of time and put away for yom tov entertaining. Then we can sit down for a few quiet hours to follow that pleasant custom of sending out greeting cards to seldom seen friends and mishpoha. POPPY SEED CRUNCH (requested by Mrs. R. Ferranti, Ellwood City, Pa.) 3 tblsps. butter or shortening % cup sugar 2 egg yolks 1 tsp. vanilla IVz cups sifted flour Va tsp. salt IVz tsps. baking power 2 egg whites 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup poppy seeds Cream the butter or shortening, gradually adding the sugar. Blend in egg yolks and vanilla. Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder and blend into the mixture. Put into a greased eight-inch square baking pan.

Beat the egg whites until they begin to stiffen, then add brown sugar and continue beating until very thick. Fold in poppy seeds. Spread this mixture over the dough in the pan. Bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees or until lightly browned and set. Cool, then cut into squares. HONEY COOKIES (milhig) y 2 cup butter or shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg, well beaten y 2 cup honey 2V 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda % tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon !4 tsp. allspice or nutmeg % tsp. cloves % cup sour milk % cup raisins 1 cup chopped nuts % cup shredded coconut (Note: to make sour milk, add one tablespoonful of lemon juice or white vinegar to sufficient milk to make the half cup in all) Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices. Cream the shortening with the brown sugar, egg and honey and beat well to blend. Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with the sour milk. Fold in raisins, chopped nuts and coconut. Spread into a shallow greased pan, 15 X 10 X y 2 inch. Bake 30 minutes at 375 degrees or until nicely browned. Frost with confectioners’ icing, if desired. Cool, then cut into bars. HONEY COOKIES (Parve) 2 eggs % cup sugar % cup honey % cup sliced almonds 2V2 cups sifted all-purpose

Roll out as thinly as possible and cut with fancy cookie cutters. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes or until browned at 350 degrees. Add nuts and fruits which have been coated with the flour. Fold in cooked noodles. Turn into a greased 1% quart baking dish. Set the dish in a pan of hot water and bake one hour at 350 degrees. Top with fruit sauce, whipped cream or serve as is. Serves 6. SPICED NUTS % cup sugar

2 tsps. cinnamon % tsp. nutmeg % tsp. cloves 1 cup nutmeats (whole Brazil nuts, almonds, pecan halves or walnut nalves) 1 slightly beaten egg white Mix sugar and spices togetner in a small bowl. Coat the nutmeats with the beaten egg white, a few at a time. When completely coated, drop each nutmeat into the bowl of sugar and spice and turn to coat all sides.
