free Purchase Campaign Wins Headers’Imagination as Sales Begin H
The drive to plant what may become large enough to warrant * National Jewish POST and OPINION forest in Israel in honor J ffC the tenth anniversary of the new Jewish state looks as if it jg beginning to capture the imag-
ination of our readers.
PURCHASES OF trees began to pour in this week., Those who purchase the trees should remember that these still may be planted, as is the normal : procedure with the Jewish National Fund, in someone’s honor, or as a memorial. A regular JNF tree certificate will be issued by the national office of the Jewish National Fund. ANOTHER POINT to remember is that the credit for the purchase goes to your local community. Although the tree is planted as a result of your desire to participate in this effort launched by The POST and OPINION, your local community gets credit in its total. The first purchase of ten trees, which is the true significance of the present campaign, was recorded. It was made by Mrs. Barney Sandock, of South Bend, Ind., who is know as Mrs. Israel of the Middle West. There is hardly any effort in behalf of Israel which doesn’t find the indefatigable Ida Sandock out persistently pressing her friends and neighbors to support. ALTHOUGH purchases of a smaller number of trees is most welcome, Mrs. Sandock’s response fits in with the program of the Jewish National Fund, which has just been announced, called “Ten Trees for Ten Years of Israel.” In announcing the start of this new program, the JNF national board pointed out that tree planting has always had special and deep significance for the Land of Israel. “TREES,” the board stated, “are an urgent necessity in Israel today where every inch of soil must be made cultivable and livable in order to support a growing population. From the Bible we know that Israel once was blessed with lush forests that covered her hillsides and valleys. But centuries of neglect, misuse, wanton exploitation and the ravages of nature, have stripped the land of its greenery. One of the primary tasks in rebuilding Israel as a modern, self-sufficient nation is that of restoring life to tke barren soil and this is the task with which the Jewish National Fund has been charged, by the Israel government and the Jewish people.” The purchases of five trees *ach added to the total. They Were by Bernard A. Zweifach of 401 Broadway, New York City, and Meyer Klein, 3005 State St., Saginaw, Mich. THE FACT that tree purchases have been coming in from all Parts of the country is encouraging. Purchases are tax deductible, a nd it is hoped that every POST ^ OPINION subscriber will Want to join in this effort on the tenth anniversary of Israel.

Jewish War Veterans Expected To M li Counter Boycott
By LEONARD LEADER LOS ANGELES (NJP) — Action by the convention of the Jewish War Veterans of America meeting here next week against the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. looms large on the basis of a special investigation which informed sources say will present clear evidence of the firm’s participation in the boycott against Israel. THE REPORT, based on long and thorough investigation, is to be delivered by Abraham Kraditor, national foreign affairs chairman. The question of a counter boycott against the Kentucky tobacco -firm, whose parent company, the British-American Tobacco Co., will not sell to Israel, will be given top priority at the convention. The matter has been under careful consideration by the national leadership. THE JWV is expected to issue a full public report on. the boycott question. More than 2,500 delegates are expected to attend the 63rd annual convention which opens this Sunday, Aug. 3 for a week of sessions. A HIGHLIGHT of the annual convention will take place at a national commander's banquet when Admiral Arleigh Burke, Chief of Naval Operations and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will analyze the current scene. A Tuesday luncheon will hear
HOW IT STARTED An Army officer, a veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic, “authoritatively” reported that in his travels throughout the United States of the 1890s he had never seen nor hear of any Jew who had served under the Union banner. It was carried by Harper’s magazine and marked the first respectable spreading of an old libel. More than 8000 Jews had served the Union, a number out of proportion to the whole population, seyen received the Congressional Medal of Honor, and several attained the rank of brigadier general. It was in part to meet this challenge that the Jewish War Veterans was organized in 1896, as the Hebrew Union Veterans organization, when 78 Jewish veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic met in New York City’s Lexington Opera House. Q . an address by David Ullman, president of the National Community Relations Advisory Council, who will discuss JWV's role in the community relations field. RUNNING at the same time as the JWV convention will be the 31st annual convention of the JWV’s Ladies Auxiliary. This is the first JWV National Convention to be held on the West Coast.

To Translate Russian
Israel Language Experts May Work for U.S. WASHINGTON, D.C. (NJP)—The United States is seeking aid from Israel in getting English translations of Russian scientific and technical publications dating from 1946 to 1954. Israel has an abundance of scientists adept in both English and Russian. The National Science Foundation has been negotiating with Israel on behalf of the U. S. Financial details of the negotiations have not been made public. If negotiations are completed, the translations would be printed in Israel. Congress will be asked for appropriations to cover the cost of the project. However, the National Science Foundation expects some revenue from the sale of the copies of the Israeli-made translations to go to industry and colleges.
