CLUB BARRING JEWS SHOWN ITS ERROR, TAKES THEM IN
NEW YORK (NJP)—After 18 years of excluding Jews, a beach club in Seattle has reversed itself and decided to admit Jewish persons. Although its by-laws made no provision for social discrimination, the Laurelhurst Beach Club, a favorite community center particularly for children, had since 1939 barred Jewish young- the American Jewish Commitsters from using its recrea- tee in its current issue, told tional facilities. ' how the change was effected. The “Committee Reporter” of The Committee last spring
proposed a plan, w'hich was accepted by the Anti-Defama-tion League and set into operation by the Seattle Civic Unity Committee. A telephone campaign w T as launched, asking beach club members to get together for a meeting on the problem. In April, 70 members met and
voiced their disapproval of the discriminatory practice. After that tfie trustees met and decided on an amendment specifying that no Laurelhurst resident should be barred from membership. “The next regular club meeting, held May 28,” says the
American Jewish Committee publication, “turned out to be the largest in the club's history. with 500 members on hand to express their unanimous support for the non-djsci iminatiou clause.” The first Jewish family wat admitted to the Laurelhurst Beach Club in June, with other? following soon after.

100,000 lives must be saved A MESSAGE ABOUT THE $100,000,000 UJA EMERGENCY RESCUE FUND
In the months ahead the world may see more than 100,000 new Jewish refugees in flight from persecution and inhumanity. In two months 11.000 Jewish men, women and children have been forced from Egypt by Colonel Nasser. Most of Egypt’s Jews —some 50,000— may be driven out by summer. * In the 1930^s Hitler's reign of terror against innocent t people — because they were Jews — sickened the civilized world. They Flee Nasserism and Communism Now Nasserism is following in Nazism's footsteps. Now Nasser's police knock on doors at midnight, confiscate private businesses; imprison men without trial and hand expulsion orders to terrified families. In Austria, meanwhile, there are thousands of new r refugees from another totalitarian oppression—Communism. When revolution and massacre swept Hungary, more than 17,000 of those who braved Soviet guns to reach Austrian freedom were Jews. The refugees from Egypt and Hungary are not all. From lands that must remain nameless—where exit doors have opened momentarily—thousands are coming out every week. They flee from renewed anti-Semitism and the sheer threat of extinction. They are coming out now. because tomorrow may be too late. AH these new refugees are searching for safety and freedom. Their lives depend on us—on what each of us does. Once the w r orld stood by helplessly while Hitler put 6,000,000 Jews to death. This time the refugees must not die. This time they must be saved and you can help save them.
You can bring many of them to free Western lands. Above all, you can help bring the new refugees to Israel—because this time, there is an Israel. This Time We Can Save Them Now no Jewish refugee need die for lack of a place to go— because Israel's free people stand ready to welcome every one who comes. But you must help. In a critical hour Israel's people will keep their doors open. But their slender resources must go for other urgent problems. To save a single refugee costs $1,000. That is the average amount needed to see him through his first year—to resettle him, house him and start him on the road to selfsupport—in Israel or any free land. It will cost $100,000,000 to save 100,000 lives. In eighteen years, UJA has rescued or aided more than 2,250,000 oppressed persons, despite Nazi terror, Communist terror and Arab terror. ^ What, Each of Us Must Do Now in 1957, to save 100,000 lives more, UJA will conduct a great Emergency Rescue Fund for $100,000,000. This sum must be raised “over and above” the regular 1 957 United Jewish Appeal—whose funds must continue the aid now going to more than half a million immigrarts already in Israel and distressed Jews in other areas. Io reach tlii? great rescue fund objective each of us must add a great "over tnid.above" gift to his regular 1957 l J\ contribution—one in keeping with the needs. Only if Americans will it—can inhumanity be answered with humanity. Only if you will it—can lives be saved— not lost—in 1957.
