Public School Teaching About Religion Vetoed NEW YORK (JP) — Oganized Jewry, almost to a body, has voiced its opposition to the public school teaching of what it terms the so-called “moral and spiritual values,” a “common core” of religious beliefs, or the “factual” or “objective” teach-

ing of religion.

National rabbinic and congregation bodies of Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Judaism expressed their opposition to such instruction in a statement of policy issued this week. The statement was approved by the Synagogue Council of America Relations Advisory Council, and was released by the latter. The two bodies represent 43 Jewish

organizations.

The basic law of the United States, the statement said in explanation of the groups* stand, “puts religion outside the jurisdiction of the state. Any impairment of that principle threatens religious liberty and brings other basic freedoms into jeop-

ardy.”

ennial convention of the United Synagogue of America opening on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Kiamesha Lake, N.Y. More than 1,000 delegates, representing over 520 conservative congregations throughout the United States and Canada, will gather for the five-day event, largest convention in United Synagogue his-

ISRAELIS CALM IN CRISIS, FEEL CONFIDENT OF VICTORY By SHLOMO ITZHAKI

Jewish Post Correspondent

TEL AVIV (JP)—Despite the turbulence on Israel’s frontiers, Israel is taking the critical situation calmly and life is proceeding

normally throughout the country.

Tlie large majority of the population appears confident that Israel will be defended by every means available and that the nation’s leaders will, as they have their struggle and sacrifice aimed previously, make every effort at the defense of their own to avoid war. homes, their wives and their Most indicative of the calm children, and the general feelway Israelis are viewing the ing is this would carry them situation is the continual stabil- through to victory,

ity of the prices of food and other goods. Also, developmental schemes, such as the construction of housing, are going forward in conformity with pre-

viously established goals. ANOTHER important, and pos -

sibly the most important, factor in the calm w*ay Israelis are taking the situation, is the prevailing belief that “there is no choice,” as well as the attitude

that “we have nowhere to go.

Israelis see only two alternatives if war comes: to defeat the

Arabs or to perish.

On the other hand, the average Israeli appears firmly convinced that world Jewry, including large segments of the Jewish masses behind the Iron Curtain, wdll promptly act to rush help to Israel in case of attack by the Arab nations. The feeling of Jewish solidarity and brotherhood has never been so strong in Israel as at this time. LAST BUT not least important among the factors bolstering Israeli morale is the firm belief of almost everyone that the country’s armed forces can defeat the Arabs. They base this belief on the high morale of the troops, which they think would overbalance any possible superiority in Egyptian armament. The Arab troops would not be defending their own country, their own homes, their own children, Israelis argue. Only the Israeli soldiers would know that

Israel Oil Well Expected to Yield 60 Tons Daily HAIFA (JP) — Oil experts have determined that the daily output of the first Israel oil well at Heletz will be at least

60 tons.

Two other wells are to be

sunk in the same area. Expectations are that the three wells will together yield a minimum of 200 tons daily within three months, an amount which would supply three-fourths of Israel’s

annual oil requirements. Eventually, experts think, the

Heletz region alone will be able to supply enough oil to meet

all of Israel’s requirements.
