THE NATIONAL JEWISH POST
BOOKS Non-Jewish Publishers' Books Prove of Value to Jewish Children
BY ABRAHAM BURSTEIN rpihe days when every storybook X or text on Bible topics, for adult or child, reeked with Christological references imposed upon Old Testament passages by non-Jewish writers, are slowly passing. Several first books about God in this category might well have been written by Jews who daily recite the Shema. The most recent of these is MacMillan’s In The Beginning ($2.00 >, by Alf Evers, whose text is a fascinating recital of everything created by God, concluding, “And He made us to love each other.’' The pictures on every
page, by Helen Sewell, are odd and delighted parents will enjoy them too. THEN THERE IS Ethel L. Smither’s Early Old Testament Stories (Abingdon, $1.50), capably illustrated in color by Kurt Wiese. The tales, ranging from Abraham in Ur to Moses at the Mount, are simply and pleasantly retold, with no allusions to Miss Smither’s previous New Testament storybook. From Harper comes the best conceived and most exciting children’s novel by Nora Benjamin Kubie, successful author and illustrator of Jewish and other
juveniles. King Solomon’s Navy ($2.50) tells the story of a runaway Judean lad, Jared, his impressment, on a dare to the King, into ship’s service at fourteen, and the many remarkable adventures encountered along the African coast, where the perfidious captain, ignoring a trust of Solomon, wandered in search of gold. Savages, strange religious practices, deadly fights and perils, mutiny, and a touch of romance, fill the volume. In addition to her breathtaking narrative, Mrs. Kubie has brilliantly reconstructed the life of those days, on land and on sea.
NEW HEBREW 7 textbooks continue to break the hearts of adults who recall the drab and difficult texts of their own Hebrew school days. Dr. Simon Greenberg’s Hasheur Harishon (United Synagogue Commission on Jewish Education, $1.10), which relates in simple Hebrew the daily life of a Jewish child, has appeared in an attractive revision, with every aid of pictures (by Lawrence Dresser), wordlists, and music. The W’orkhook, by Rebekah J. Kohn ($0.85), is correspondingly felicitous. From the same publisher comes also a revision of the second of
this educational series by Dr. Greenberg. Parts A-B of Hayehtidi Harishon ($1.10) tells about Abraham in prose and verse; the book is embellished by the black-and-white drawings of R. Tyor. Further reprints of this series are to appear shortly; and if we were a Jewish child, we could hardly wait.
