Some of us rebel at the vicissitudes of Fate. We often And fault with the little, vexatious trials that confront occasionally. Here was a woman of eighty, who, before she was sixteen, found herself with four motherless children to rear, three boys, the oldest eight, and one little sis-

She deprived herself of comforts in those early days so that she might feed and clothe her children. During these weeks of pain, she said "I am unafraid. I am ready to go! God has been good to me. He let me rear them and they are all good children." Emms Stern was crippled with arthritis. She was confined to her home for the past six or eight years. She had to use a walker. But these things never kept her from cooking and baking and Biending for her loved ones. Yes, the brothers and the sister proved her faith in them "for never could any dear ones have ministered to her, more devotedly, more untiringly, more unselfishly. Her little old prayer book—one published many years ago—was so thumbed that Rabbi Maurice Goldblatt who conducted the services, found no difficulty in finding and reading her favorite prayers. And all those favorite prayers asked God for strength and guidance for her daily tasks. Rabbi Goldblatt closed his lovely tribute to Emma with verses on immortality she had kept in

the little prayer book. They attested to her belief that there is no death, that the soul is immortal and that separation is only temporary. We feel that her big loving soul will never be far away

from her dear ones!
