U. S. Jews Had Fine Time Sabbath New Year’s, Survey Shows
MTERIES POPULAR WITH JEWS DO LAND-OFFICE BUSINESS
By The National Jewish Post The majority of American Jews, whether affiliated with a synagogue or not, didn’t let Friday Sabbath spoil their fun New Year's Eve, a nation-wide survey by the National Jewish Post dis-
closed this week.
mmm| The national network of NJP correspondents were ■ asked to report on both types of Jews in their communi9 ties by direct checks with Jewish houses of worship and ■I by checking attendance at night spots popular with Jewish
customers. The clash between the Chanukah Sabbath and the traditional New Year's Eve revelry was no problem for unaffiliated Jews, the survey showed. For affiliated Jews, the strain was - great in some cases, small in others. Many solved the problem by coming to services dressed for immediate departure for celebrations after the services were com-
pleted.
The rabbis accepted the possibility that the pull of New Year’s Eve celebrations might be too much for their less faithful congregants and offered a variety of compromises to make attendance more attractive or at least less burdensome. Some Jewish communities re-
ported that appeals made prior to the Sabbath helped attendance, in some cases it made no difference. Generally attendance, except for Orthodox congregations, slipped bblow normal. 1 One notable exception to the tendency of even affiliated Jews to stay away from services New Year’s Eve was Miami Beach, which is rapidly becoming a national playground for American
Jews.
Rabbi Irving Lehrman, spiritual leader of (Conservative) Miami Beach Jewish Community Council, said an appeal for attendance on the Chanukah Sabbath was made previously and that the attendance was gratifying. All 1900 seats in the building were filled and many stood through the services. Rabbi Leo Kronish of (reform) Temple Beth Sholom, said all members and friends of the congregation turned out. Rabbi Moses Meschelkoff of (Orthodox) Beth Jacob said that as secretary of the Rabbinical Association, he made a public appeal for attendance or at least a minimum of revelry. A survey indicated that the fast-growing Jewish community cooperated. Police reported the quietest New Year’s
binate and closed. The swanky Standard Club had its regular
party.
Many Jews Had Fun Correspondents were almost unanimous in reporting that unaffiliated Jews—presumably including those who do not read a Jewish publication or who would ignore an appeal not to revel on the Sabbath—had themselves a wonderful time. In Philadelphia, all the midtown night clubs are patronized by predominantly Jewish customers and they broke all records this year, the NJP correspondent reported. The Latin Casino turned them away. The Embassy club was open till the wee hours with a capacity crowd. These are the two most popular spots for Jews. Harry Steinman, owner of the Latin Casino, told The Post that he had the greatest New Year's Eve in his history and that he saw all his regular Jewish customers. A similar comment was made by Herb Sfniler and Sam Silberg of the Embassy club. Reliable estitmates in Pittsburgh indicated that at least 90 per cent of that City’s Jews were out celebrating. Jackie Heller’s Carousel, a favorite night spot of Jews, was sold out a full week
Sisterhoods Have Fun EL PASSO, Tex.—(NJP)— The Sisterhoods of Temple Mount Sinai and of B’nal Zion sponsored New Year’s Eve parties and the rabbis decided against appeals for special attendance at services on grounds such appeals would have been futile. • • « ROCHESTER, N. Y.—(NJP) —The Ironiquolt Country Club, a Jewish social club, held Its atuiual New Year’s Eve party on schedule. * v • BOSTON—(NJP)—Rabbi Judah Naditeh of Temple Kehilath Israel reported that his synagogue was filled New Year’s morning. He said he felt this. indicated that most of the congregation had not been up all night in gayety.
before New Year’s Eve—at $15 per person. Some Came, Some Didn’t The split between affiliated and unaffiliated was particularly marked in Pittsburgh, where all rabbis agreed that Jews who usually come to services on Friday evening didn’t let the New Years Eve stop them. In Memphis, there are two night clubs frequented by Jews— the Town Club and the Ridgeway Country Club. The Town Club reported an expected attendance, with half of the revelers Jews. The 100 per cent Jewish Country Club had its expected
turnout.
Commented a Jewish leader: "The night club business did not suffer in Memphis because of the
Sabbath."
St. Louis reported excellent turnouts for night clubs if not for its synagogues. Sam Koplar, owner of the Chase Club, reported the greatest attendance h years and that 95 per cent c-f the celebrants were Jewish. He said Sabbath eve made no difference. Swanky Club The Chase club is one of the swankier clubs, patronized by St. Louis’ wealthier Jews. It has the
Eve in years. Appeals Made In Plenty The success of the rabbinate in appeals to Jewish clubs to cancel normal parties was only nominal. The Portland Board of Rabbis appealed for no public celebration under Jewish auspices and with one exception, Jewish groups
complied.
The exception was the Portland Country Club, which has an almost all-Jewish m«mber'ship. In response'to an appeal from the rabbis “in the name of Jewish self-respect," the club replied, in effect, that it was too late to cancel plans. On the other hand, the Ramblers Young Men’s Social and Service club cancelled its traditional dance at a reported loss
of $450.
At Atlanta, Jewry normally patronizes three private Jewish dubs. Two of them—the Jewish Progressive Club and the Mayfair club—yielded to pleas of the rab-

The kibbutzim and the cooperatives of the Haoved Hatzioni deserve the help which the Mapai and the Ma* pam kibbutzim get from their supporters here. Any small trader or middle class man who does not wish to join the existing socialist or religious groupings ought to be helped in housing, in credit facilities. And as for the foreign policy of the Mapai, which Rabbi Brickner wants his proposed new party to support, there is a State of Israel in existence and whatever Its elected government does in the field of foreign policy, all Zionists, all Jews of America, will support it, no matter what party in Zionism here, no matter what party in Israel there.

May Finds Bright Yule Setting For ZOA Speech At Jewish Club
National Jewish Post ATLANTA—Not even a Zionist meeting staged in a Jewish club could be considered a guarantee this week that during the Christmas season a Jewish affair will be minus manifestations of the Yule-
tide.
Mortimer May, a top ranking leader in the giant Zionist Organization of America, found .himself addressing the Atlanta Zionist district from a rostrum last week which was gaily adorned with Christmas trimmings. A virtual forest of silversheathed pillars, suspended garlands, giant red bows and glittering tinsel furnished a freakish backdrop for the address by May at the Standard Club, » private Jewish social club, four days after Christmas. A shiny and huge “Merry Christmas” sign was hastily removed just before the ZOA vicepresident’s talk, after a huddled exchange between Zionist officials and the club management. May, who is widely regarded as a presidential possibility, came
MORTIMER MAY here to promote the sale of secun ities of the Israel Corporation of America, a major ZOA project ol which he is one of the organizers. The corporation is embarking on a $6,000,000 housing project in Israel, in partnership" with th« Jewish Agency and plans to irv vest up to 50 percent of the total to be secured by a first mortgage.
best floor show in town. Jewish night club star Harry Riichman was the club’s New Year's Eve attraction. Cincinnati night dubs, across the river where gambling though illegal is tolerated, were sold out weeks In advance with Hie usual proportion of Jewish reservations. The Post was informed on very reliable authority that Indianapolis Jews, who attended services spottily, thronged to Cincinnati’s night spots. Cincinnati is a popular spot with the Indianapolis Jewish community and hundreds of Indianapolis Jews were reported seen in Cincinnati night spots New Year’s Eve. As far as could be deter-
mined, with the exception of Miami Beach, Orthodox congregations drew the best attendance, allowing for the fact that most orthodox synagogues hold p re-Sundown Friday services, rather than in the evening. Reports to that effect came from a dozen cities. The reform congregations did the most shifting, stretching and easing of services with varying results. Didn’t Work Here Rabbi William H. Fineshriber of Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia, switched services from usual 8:30 p.m. to5:30 p.m. for both Christmas and New Year’s Eve and had less attendance than normal. (Continued on next page)
