PARKCHESTER ZIONIST DISTRICT HEADS FOR DROPPING SHEKEL DRIVE
Editor, National Jewish Post, I am in full support of reader Wrazlowsky’s contention that Zionists throughout the world are dissipating their strength at the behest of the front office. In their political jockeying for power at the next World Congress, the immediate, vital concern of the Yishuv which may have an army on its borders tomorrow, is lost sight of. Repre-
sentatives of the regions fritter their time away selling shekolim instead of raising funds for the military defense of a State. Is it going to be “too little and too late”? HARRY GOODMAN Member of the Board District 40 MRS. MAX BELSKY Member of the Board District 39 Bronx, N. Y.
Not Worried By Size. Believes State Will Grow Editor, National Jewish Post A Jewish State is in the making. October the first, 1948, the Jewish State will be free to govern its people as a free Republic. However, to our sorrows, the new born infant Jewish State will be small in size without our holy city, Jerusalem. Yet it will grow in size like an infant child to adulthood, if peace and unity exist within that Jewish State lor years to follow. Very few of us realize what a well-established and recognized Jewish free government could do for its people and land in later years. It could get loans if it desires, make important treaties with big nations, buy land if it needs, etc. Thus let us put aside our fear on account of the small size of the Jewish State in Judea in its early beginning, for Jerusalem and other Jewish territory will come later when the Jewish State will be in a position to take it. Again I will say only in unity and peace among all classes in New Judea will the Jewish State grow and be in a position to become a light of peace for all flesh to follow; thus, to fulfill prophecy as it is written in our Hebrew Bible. I remain HARRY GREENBERG 1568 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Says Politics Harmful Continued from proceeding page new chaos in the Middle East by the UN decision. The losers are the Jews all over the world. History has shown that whenever the Jews embraced politics their friends of the moment deserted them in time of crisis. Already the chancellories of the world are fearful of a Soviet penetration to the Mediterranean (Newsweek, Dec. 1, p. 32, Secretary of State Marshall’s stern warning to Moshe Shertok). MAURY M. T _ 'vON'T believe that rumor I J that Hank Greenberg will be back with the Detroit Tigers next season. It was started in jest by one of the big-wigs in the Detroit outfit. We wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Hank winds up as an owner of a pro club before the start of the ’48 season. ★ ★ ★ Harry Choaen, who starred with two Southern Association teams, has been named manager of the Miami Beach team of the Florida International league. He succeeds A1 Leitx. Martin Ruby, a tackle from Brooklyn, was named on the second team of the AP All Pro team, while Lou Sossaman, a center with the Yonkees wa son the honorable mention list. ★ ★ ★ ' Irv Moundstein, a member of the City College football coaching staff, has been retained for next year along with Head Coach Harold Parker.

'TVHE New York boxing beat is talking about the splendid job A Ruby Goldstein did in the Louis-Walcott fight. Ruby was the referee who voted in favor of Walcott. Goldstein is very friendly with Joe Louis, having served with him in athletic capacities during the war. Many ringsiders would not have thought it amiss had the Walcott brain trust asked the New York Boxing Comn is* sion to bar Ruby as referee. His friendship with Louis was well known. Despite this affiliation Goldie saw his duty and chalked up the fight in Jersey Joe’s favor. In fight circles this feat of honesty is regarded highly. ★ ★ ★ This is a story about the one boxing writer, probably in the whole country, who picked Waloot to win and then changed his mind at the last moment and came out in favor of the champ. Lester Bromberg of the New York World Telegram had given considerable thought to the heavyweight fight of recent date and decided that Walcott stood a very good chance of licking the champ. Lester reasoned that Louis had grown rusty, not having had a good fight in seven years. He was always a sucker for a right-hand punch. On the other hand, Walcott was a pretty stiff belter with his right mitt and was still battling to keep his large brood of wife and six children in food money. As a result, Bromberg sat down at his typewriter the Thursday afternoon before the fight and knocked out a piece picking Walcott as the winner. He headed the piece "Walcott New Heavyweight King” and dropped it at the sports desk. Shortly thereafter Bromberg left the World-Telegram office and got on the subway, headed for home. He began to mull over the contents of his piece and grew panicky. He reasoned, “after all, I picked Mauriello to lick Lesnevich and Gus knocked out Tammy. There are 846 other writers in the country picking Louis, I am the only one selecting Walcott. Maybe I am wrong.” So thinking, Bromberg got off at the next station and retraced his tracks to the office where he wrote a new piece, lining up with the other 846 experts selecting Louis to retain his title. The chances are very good that when Walcott and Louis get together again this coming June, Bromberg will again pick Walcott to win, only this time he will not change his story at the last minute. ★ * -‘r Hank Greenberg finally has undergone an operation to remove the bone chips in his right elbow and according to his doctor is coming along splendidly. The fact that Hank, at 37, went under the knife indimtes that he intends to prolong his baseball career. He has always wanted to finish his playing days in New York City and may sign with the New York Yankees. On the other hand, he has always been a great tdmirer of Joe McCarthy and would relish playing under the Irish manager for Boston. The Boston Red Sox left field fence is short enough to offer an attractive target for Hank’s booming bat, and Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey is one solon who doesn’t argue about a buck. If McCarthy wants Hank to play first base for him Yawkey will shell out the dough. Moe Becker, former Duquesne University basketball flash, who played with the Philadelphia Sphas and sundry teams in the B.A.A. League, as well as in the now defunct Basketball League of America, is returning to his alma mater as assistant coach to theh famous Chick Davies. Davies has long sought an ideal assistant to relieve htim of the numerous details involved in coaching a large squad. He feels that Becker is one of the best qualified of his recent graduates to take over the post. In addition to helping with the coaching of the Dukes, Moe will continue playing pro ball with the Altoona Edwards, a fast club sponsored by a Pittsburgh suit and cloak merchant, ★ ★ ★ True MKgmzlne has announced that it will again ran Hie. All-American Basketball Team sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This is an important item for the corner since True Magazine annually turns the results over to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to help in the selecting of oar annual all-Jewtsh combination.
