Phyllis Levy Is Betrothed To Bernard Brown .Special SOUTH BEND-Mr. and Mrs. Louis Levy, 1518 E. Colfax Ave., announce the engagement of their daughter, Phyllis Jean, to Midshipman Bernard M. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Brown, Kansas City, Mo. Midshipman Brown is stationed at Columbia University, New York City. He was graduated from the school of engineering, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,* where he was president of Zeta Beta Tau. Miss Levy is a sophomore in the University of Michigan and a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi.

Mrs. Josephine Stem Dies in Chicago Kpccial GARY—Funeral services were held for Mrs. Josephine Stem, 59, in Chicago Tuesday, Dec. 26, with burial in St. Louis. Mrs. Stern was a Gary policewoman for fourteen years prior to her retirement, due to ill health, a year ago. Most of the years she was a juvenile officer, but shortly before her retirement was transferred to school traffic. She was stationed at Virginia Street and Seventh Avenue for about a year. On'her retirement she went to live in Chicago with her son, William. Her husband, Ignatz. died many years ago. A daughter, Pauline, resides in California.
TERRE HAUTE—Lt. and MxS. Albert Katz announce the birth of a son, Frederick Lee, Wednesday, Dec. 27. The Rev. Jake Kaplin, Racine, Wis., uncle of Mrs. Katz, officiated at the B’rith Millah. Out of town guests were Lt. Katz’s parents, Mr. and Mrs Harry Katz of South Bena. Mrs. Katz is the former Blanche Rose Schultz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Schultz, and is making her home with her parents for the duration. Lt. Katz is in Germany, where he has met his brother-in-law, Capt. Irving S. Tockman, on several occasions. Capt. Tockman’s wife is also a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Schultz. * * * Mr. and Mrs. William Jacob, formerly of Evansville, now living at 1039 Brandson Ave., Norfolk, Va., announce the birth of a daughter, Jeri Adler Jacob at Norfolk General Hospital.
Ethel Kravitz, Maurice Shapiro Exchange Vows Sprrlal SOUTH BEND—Maurice Sha piro, son of Mrs. Nathan Shapiro, and Miss Ethel Kravitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kravitz of Chicago, exchanged nuptial vows Sunday, Dec. 24, in Chicago. The immediate family was present. The couple left for a honeymoon and has returned. They are now at home in the Oliver Hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Joseph, and daughter, Maxine Ellen, will go to St. Louis this week-end to visit Mrs. Joseph’s brother, T/Sgt. Robert A. Brolich and Mrs. Drolich. From there they will go to Lincoln, Neb., to visit another brother, Cpl. Albert Drolich.
Mrs. Zelda Sobele Dies; Gary Resident 30 Tears Special GARY—Mrs. Zelda Bobele, 83, Gary resident for 30 years, died last week in a convalescent home in Chicago. She was buried in the Beth El cemetery at Gary. Funeral services were read by Rabbi Jacob Fox of Chicago. Survivors are two sons, Max Bobele in Gary, and Mannie, of Chicago; and four daughters, Mrs. Harry Madorin, Mrs. Louis Teller and Mrs. Jack Glassberg of Chicago, and Mrs. Morris Novick of Los Angeles, Calif.

Husband of Former Gary Resident Dies Special GARY—Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 27 for Irving Epstein, of Chicago husband of the former Elsie Freund Gordon of Gary. Mr. Epstein died at his home in the Piccadilly Hotel in Chicago following a six-month illness. Burial was at Mount Israel cemetery in Chicago. Rabbi Garry August, of Gary, officiated. Mrs. Epstein lived in Gary from 1923 until 1936. Mr. and Mrs. David Fink have been called to Chicago by the death of Mrs. Fink’s mother, Mrs. Rachel Brill. Mrs. Brill is survived by three other daughters and one son. The latter, Dr. Harold Brill, with the United States Medical Corps, is en route overseas to a combat zone.
