CANADIAN CLOUDS Flying to Montreal in perfect weather. As we look down from the plane window the earth seems well ordered and systematically arranged. Well-kept farms, neat red and white houses ,lazy cattle, and calm and peace over all. A soldier transported overnight from the battlefield might think these green and brown hills and valleys between New York and Montreal were a new planet, the Kingdom of God. But once in Montreal, one is rudely reminded that the world has not changed much—and, if at all, for the worse. * * * THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW The Canadian Province of Quebec is one of the most beautiful and most backward regions on the globe. Clerical Fascism flourishes there undisturbed. Cardinal Villeneuve, the recognized spiritual head of the French Canadians, dreams of a corporate state and openly approves a French Canadian boycott of Jewish merchants. The Quebec provincial elections will Ire held on Aug. 8, and the campaign is in full swing now. Three parties are in the contest for political control of this province, the population of which is overwhelmingly French Canadian. The three parties are the Bloc Populaire, the Union National© and the Liberals, who are now in power. The Bloc Populaire and the Union Nalionale are unquestionably Fascistic in their political orientation. * * * THE NORTH AMERICAN ARGENTINE The press of these two Fascistically inclined (to put it mildly) parties is frankly pro-Franco and pro-Sinarquist. If you read the Action Nationale of the Bloc Populah’e you are propelled back into the Middle Ages. Andre Laurendeau, their leader, advocate a French and Catholic Canada, He urges French Canadian women to super fecundity as a means of capturing Canada for the French Canadians. Laurendeau maintains cordial relations with the Polish Fascist groups in Western Canada and in Latin America, and is very friendly with the Falange. * * * CANADIAN NAZIS The Union Nationale is seeking power so aggressively that it stoops to open anti-Semitism to make political hay. Its leader, Maurice Duplessis, is by far the shrewdest of the French Canadian politicians. It was he who some months ago projected the hoax that the Liberal Government of Quebec was planning to settle 100,000 Jewish refugees in the Province of Quebec. L’Union Nationale directs its appeal to the younger generation and is skillfully manipulating the anti-Semitic issue as a vote gathering fishing net. Duplessis’ election campaign is by far the most effective and most active. He uses all the paraphernalia of modern propaganda over the radio and employs many women as campaign workers. • * * * FASCISM ON THE MARCH The Liberals, under the leadership of Premier Godbout, are a rather anemic, colorless party trying to follow a middle of the road policy. They enjoy the support of the English section of the Province of* Quebec and that of those French Canadiana who believe in and want the status quo. We do not believe that Godbout will succeed in maintaining a majority over the Bloc Populaire and the Union Nationale. He has been supporting the Canadian war effort, within certain limits, notwithstanding the anti-wai attitude of a majority of the French Canadians and their church. There is a strong possibility that he not only will be beaten but will go down to a disastrous defeat. * * * GENERAL IMPRESSIONS As you travel about the small towns and villages of Quebec Province y;.u get the feeling that the people are not yet infected, but merely swayed by a consistent anti-British and anti-Jewish propaganda. In other words, they are simple, naive people who are l>eing manipulated by ruthless political intriguers backed and, more often, prodded on by a clerical Fascist church. The Quebec hierarchy aould, if it wanted to, change the atmosphere overnight. If the Quebec clergy were to translate the Pope’s pronouncement against anti-Semitism into concerete action, the Province of Quebec could be paradise on earth. The propaganda that is peddling anti-Semitism, anti-war ideas and aMti-Bntish feeling is mild in the press, but strong and well organized as conducted by parish workers by the mouth-to-mouth metF d Sinister whispering campaigns about Jv. Hsh conspiracies to comroi the economic life of Quebec Province arc rampant. * * * NO JEWISH LEADERSHIP The attitude of the Jewish community reminds us of the Jewish position in Germany in 1929 and 1930. There is appeasement on every front and a blatant lack of unity. For instance : In this election the Jew's will, for the fii’st time in 20 years, lose their one representative in the Provincial Parliament. In the St. Louis district, where the Jews could elect a representative, four Jewish candidates are fighting one another. The result will be that the Bloc Populaire candidate will b: presented with the election on a silver platter because of a disrupted, confused and split Jewish vote. Jewish leadership failed in this emergency. The Canadian Jewish Congress looks on with folded arms. In this crisis the Jews need their very best spokesman in Quebec—but they will have nobody. We predict that after the elections the Bloc Populaire and the Union Nationale will form a coalition government.

That government will drive aggressively toward a corporate Fascist regime. And the Jewfc of the Province of Quebec are in for a very tiagic chapter in the history of the Jews in the Western Hemisphere.

Every Friday of Cincinnati re prints the following piece of anti-anti-Semitic doggerel which was sent to it by one of its readers. It is in the foim of a throw-away, printed on heavy paper, and folded so as to appear like a booklet: What great y rOng have they don" to you? I asked a damner of the Jew. His answer was, don’t you hear people say, “They control everything in the U. S. A.?” He said his dislike for them is innate— Bpt that’s wrong—it’s an evil habit they cultivate! And the stories they tell are so foolish they’re funny, When they say the Jews have all the money. Is Henry Ford, John D., or Mellon a Jew? Chrysler, Raskob, Schwab, Marshall Field, only a few Of the Gentiles who have most of our gold— All our great industries are Gentile controlled. And when you speak of bankers and banks, You will find but three Hebrews away up In the ranks— The European Rothscliild, Loeb and Kuhn— And where have you read thev caused any ruin? Does Morgan, Giannini, Lament, Chase or Sloan Knock off the intex - est when they okay your loan? And who are the makers of powder and shot? If the DuPonts are Jewish then Moses was not! And this is another wrong, biased bleat, When they yell about Jews controlling our meat— Cudahy, Armour, Wilson, Libby, McNeill, Swift, Hormel, Hammond—no Jew blood reveal. List up the stockholders in the chain grocery store; You will find to one Jew, Gentiles by the score. There isn’t much left for the Jew, it would seem; He may control some textiles and have a voice in the screen. And now for religion—the Good Books all say, That we would be heathens but for a Jew named Isaiah— And what were Matthew, Mark. Luke, John and Paul? The prophets and Apostles were Jews one and all— There are good and bad in every creed and race— And the good Jews try to keep the bad in their place. Sixteen million Jews in all, in all this great sphere And only a coward that

minority would fear. You know this is all true, but I must explain— That my father is from Ireland, mother’s from Spain, Which leave me all Gentile and proud to express my views On the decency and good fellowship of most all Jews. “Come now, let us reason togeth.-r. said the Lord.”—Isaiah 1:18. * * • Alexander F. Miller, whom I once told you was the Florida regional director of the B'nai B’rith, in his column, “Face Facts,” in The Jewish Floridian, prints a letter he received from a Jewish traveling salesman, who makes the point that “a man with antiSemitic tendencies may often be found to be a nice guy victimized by Nazi propaganda” and disagrees with those who feel it useless to get into any kind of discussion with persons who express

anti-Semitic views. The traveling salesman tells of this incident, which I am reprinting only in part. “Sergeant Sullivan was a nice looking redheaded kid from Boston. We met on a train going from New Orleans to New York. He told me a strange story. Six months before our meeting he went from camp to his home in Boston to marry. He brought his bride back to Hattiesburg and placed her in a home that took m boarders. He went to camp and that week-end came to town to be with his wife. She informed Sullivan that they would have to move, the reason being that the lady of the house discovered they were Catholics and stated that in 50 years of her folks owning the house there never had been a Catholic in it and she didn’t want any either. Sullivan did not get mad about it, he said, but found his wife another home. No use getting angry about narrowminded people is there, he asked me! Now for the point!
