Drive Leaders Say 20 % Larger Gifts War Fund Need Need for increased giving to the United War Fund campaign which begins its city-wide drive on Oct. 25 was stressed this week by Jewish Welfare Fund leaders in a letter to the Jewish community. The JWF which is an affiliate of the United War Fund will receive $170,000 for local, national and overseas needs. In accepting the recommendation of the Jewish Welfare Fund Budget Committee, W. C. Griffith, president of the United War Fund stated that “While this sum ($170,000) represents about 15 per cent more than was actually raised in Indianapolis by the Jewish Welfare Fund in its last campaign, we recognize clearly the great burden which has been placed upon Jewish agencies as a result of Nazi oppression abroad.” Jewish Welfare Fund leaders emphasized in a New Year’s statement that giving will have to be increased approximately 20 per cent if the War Fund is to meet the budget for Jewish causes. Increased funds will be needed to provide immediate aid to hundreds of thousands of Jews in territory free from the shadow of the Axis and help to those who have endured ten years of Hitlerism. At the same time there are new possibilties for the rescue of thousands of Jewish children in North Africa, Russia and the Balkans who have been orphaned or separated from their parents by the war and Nazi persecution.
