J.D.C. Gives $910,000 In 3 Months, Denies Nazis Gain Benefits By Jewish Trle(triiphle Agenry NEW YORK—Funds provided by American Jewry through the United Jewish Appeal enabled the Joint Distribution Committee to carry on urgent emergency relief activities at the peak of the European conflict during the period from May 10 to August 10, when a total of $910,000 was spent to aid Jews in areas suffering in Europe, it was revealed in a report by Morris C. Troper, chairman of the J. D. C. European Council. A financial clearance agreement with the J. D. C. has with the German government made possible the expenditure of this large sum of money, even though no American dollars were sent into Germany or Germanoccupied territories.
Shofar-ing Made Easy By Jewlxh Telegraphic Agency CINCINNATI. — The shofar with a mouthpiece, developed by the Committee on Ceremonies of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations “in order to revive the beauty and solemnity of the shofar service on Rosh Hashonah,” has been adopted by many congregations throughout the country, the Union’s Commission on Synagogue Activities reports. In addition to supplying new shofars fitted with mouthpieces, the commission is fitting trumpet mouthpieces with very shallow bowls to shofars sent in by many congregations. Experiment has proved that the mouthpiece facilitates the blowing of the shofar without changing th* traditional tone, it is stated.
Expressing surprise at the fact that doubts and misconceptions have been created with regard to the progress of the work of the J. D. C. at a period of the greatest crisis for Jews in Europe, Troper pointed out that U. J. A. funds received by the J D. C. for relief work in territories under German control did not in any way aid German economy or interfere with the British blockade.
Rutenberg Resigns, Charging No Unity By Jewish Telegraphic Agency JERUSALEM — The executive committee of the Jewish National Council decided this week to hold elections as soon as possible for the Jewish National Assembly (Asefath Hanivcharim), highest governing body of the Palestine Jews, following resignation of Council President Pinchas Rutenberg in protest against what he called factionalism in the Jewish community. The Hebrew press devoted considerable attention to Rutenberg’s resignation. Haaretz declared editorially that the resignation marked •the failure of the Jewish community’s first attempt to conduct its affairs on non-partisan principles. The laborite Davar blamed “certain personalities.” Haboker openly blamed “the leading party”—meaning the laborites—for Rutenberg’s failure. Rutenbei'g, noted industrialist, resigned with a warning that the party system made “effective management” of the council impossible. In a letter to Chairman Isaac Ben Zvi, Rutenberg conveyed his thanks to the council for its confidence in him and added: “For ten months I tried to unite the Jewish community, but failed. Only unity and self- sacrifice of party interests to the nation’s benefit can help us cope with a grave situation.”
Front Aid Held Under Observation By JmvUh TeWraplilr Agency NEW YORK.—W i 11 i a m Fox, bodyguard of Joseph McWilliams, organizer of the Christian Mobilizers, this week was committed to Bellevue Hospital for 10 days’ mental observation after a probation officer had reported in Harlem Magistrates Court that he was a “religious maniac” with a “fixation against the Jews.” Fox was up for sentence on an assault charge arising out of a disturbance on Aug. 7 at a McWilliams meeting.
Wallace Tells Negroes Bias Brings Disunity By Jewish Telegraphic Agrency CHICAGO—The best way to rearm democracy is to get rid of hatred and discrimination, Henry A. Wallace, Democratic vice presidential candidate, declared this week in a speech at the American Negro Exposition. He assailed all persons who accept the “scapegoat doctrine,” centering upon some minority group as responsible for human troubles. Wallace said: “It is a human trait to put the blame upon someone else; upon the stranger, upon someone whose religion, whose race and nationality is different from one’s own. That story is written upon the pages of history in blood. The ending of the story is the same. More hatred, more persecution, more misery, suffering and tragedy. “One of the most effective ways to fight Fascism and Nazism in this country is to fight class, religious and racial discrimination in the United States. It is time that human beings get rid of some snjurious prejudices and superstitions which definitely belong in the discard. “We accept the word of science that the world is round and that the earth revolves around the sun. I see no reason not to accept the word of science that there is no proof that one race is superior to another. If that is true—and, as I have said, I see no reason to doubt it—a lot of the responsibility that we have put on nature is our responsibility, after all. “And to accept our responsibility we must do all that we can to get rid of hatred and discrimination and to give human beings the opportunity to which they are entitled. There is no better way to rearm democracy.” Mrs. Leon Stern spent the week end in Lafayette. WANT AD FOR SAL E—Delicious homemade cookies. Epidemics In Poland Admitted By Nazis; Situation Is Still Bad By Jewlah Telegraphic Agency GENEVA—The deaths of thousands of persons in epidemics in Nazi occupied Poland is admitted for the first time in an official German statement. In a report to Berlin, Dr. Wallborn, Nazi health director in the Nazi held government general area of Poland, declares that while most of the epidemics in the territory have been brought under control, the situation regarding some diseases “is still very unsatisfactory.” Reviewing the measures taken to check epidemics, the official declares that some villages were entirely walled off to prevent contact with the outside world. “The strict regulations proved successful although thousands of people died,” he says. “Present figures on infectious diseases are lower than for the corresponding period in 1938, but the position is still very unsatisfactory. This is mainly the fault of Jews, who are so accustomed to living in unimaginable filth and so ci-owded together that the only hope of finally coping with these diseases is to isolate the Jews from the rest of the population.”
