For the clouds that menace Israel are darker and denser than ever before. I tell you there is nothing to brighten your darkness. Not one thing. Israel writhes in the grip of her enemies.” For a moment I wondered was he about to announce a rise in the income tax, or the foreclosure of the mortgage. What else could fling these people into despair? But the faces around me were bland and serene—and they must know better than I. I was but a stranger. The voice was becoming hysterical—it rose shriller and shriller as he deplored the task that was his. The horror of a civilization that placed him in such an unenviable position, to be forced to stand before them without a gleam of hope, or a ray of light to offer. The man seated next to me chose that moment to heave himself into a more comfortable position. With so much darkness and so much food, his eyes were closing, and from the seat behind came another pungent and expensive whiff of perfume. The lady also must be feeling the shade. Yet the darkness was unconvincing in the glare of the modem lighting. The central light was especially illuminative. Its richly pearled rays penetrated the furtherest corners of the Temple. We were being taken to Germany and to Poland, that cess spot of horror for European Jewry, where millions of lives are lived out under the yoke of martyrdom. The rabbi's voice had dropped to a sympathetic murmur, distress needed the edge smoothed down. So he told how bravely these people were bearing their misfortunes, what courage and fortitude were displayed even under the terror of pogroms. But the story was strangely unmoving. A pogrom had no relation to this congregation. Perhaps the lights were too festive, or the atmosphere too comfortable. A pogrom needs more than eloquence to turn it into a message in a luxury sodden world, where conscience sleeps serene in cotton-wool wrappings. • . • WHY did I feel that the Jews of ” Poland and Germany would have laughed despite their misery, could they but have peeped into this New Year service. But I think that their laughter might have been intermingled with tears. Surely they must have wept to see the Spirit of Israel, the flame they
