In short, the average student at Indiana University may be indifferent to, but is not antagonistic to religion. It is for this reason that a Hillel Foundation on a university campus is so essential, for it is our task to try to give Jewish students an intelligent approach to the religion of their fathers. It matters little whether one clings to the traditional or the liberal viewpoint—that is a matter of individual background and inclination—the important thing is to know and understand clearly the fundamental tenets and aims of Judaism. Hillel, therefore, does not try to impose any particular aspect of Judaism, but we do try to make clear that, whether one follows the path of Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform Judaism, the ultimate goal is the same, and it is this ultimate goal we endeavor to keep always before the students, so that their hazy religious instincts and inclinations may ultimately crystallize into a positive, effective Judaism which will give meaning and significance to their lives and make them assets to their community and country.
