two high-ranking S. S. men the crowd dispersed. Two women made the sign of the cross. A few minutes later a police wagon arrived to take the rabbi and his wife away. The young priest wiped his face, and disappeared as quietly as he had come. A Walk in the Cemetery The public parks of Vienna are well known for their beautiful landscaping, and the beaches are equally excellent. In all public places, however, the following placard is posted: "Entry to Jews is strictly prohibited by law!” The scorching heat of mid-Au-gust (lung heavily upon the city, making almost unbearable the stench in the poverty-stricken streets and houses of the Ghetto. Nevertheless, because of the present religious discriminations, it was impossible to make use of the beaches or the parks. The Jews came to a mutual agreement and decided to open the cemeteries. There, at least, they could come and go, freely and without interference. Wooden benches were placed upon the graves; the grass which covered the graves made an excellent playground for the children. There would be no anger in the souls of the forefathers that the descendants found sanctuary upon their ashes. Every afternoon about 5 o’clock the exodus from the Ghetto begins. Jewish mothers, with the proud bearing of martyrs, push their baby carriages or walk side by side with their young ones. The current of human souls flows until all the Jewish cemeteries are filled to capacity. Many times the traffic is so dense that it closely resembles the 5 o’clock subway “rush” ir. New York! An odd picture of the Vienna we once knew and loved as the most “gemutlich” city in the world. • * * A Lady Scrubs the Streets Ore morning anti-Fascist symbols were discovered to have been chalked upon the steps of a tomb. The public was greatly amused when suddenly a very elegantly clad lady stopped and shook her head in disapproval of the scene. “Perhaps you do not like it?” asked one of the Nazis. “No,” she answered quietly, “I definitely do not like it!” Angered by her retort, another S. A. man exclaimed, “Well, get busy, then, and start scrubbing also!” She replied with a smile “I’d be delighted, but I have no rags.” “Use your dress!” shouted the man brutally. Without a word the lady did as she was ordered. Thrusting her fine garment in the dirty water, she
