I walked along a street in Leopoidstadt one Friday evening, a blistering heat oppressed the city. My eyes came to rest upon an old house before which an almost biblical scene was represented. As twilight began to settle on the city, the old rabbi donned his prayer vestments and, amid the laughter and derision of the heckling crowd, began to pray. One after another, young Hitlerites strolled past and spat upon the praying Jew'. Never once did he interrupt communion with his God to wipe his spattered face. In fact, so complete was his spiritual abstraction that the filth and muck of the street never even penetrated the threshold of his consciousness. Suddenly silence reigned. A powerful, young priest pushed his way through the crowd. Taking a handkerchief from his pocket, he carefully wiped the old rabbi’s face. The crowd, momentarily stunned by this extraordinary scene, remained silent. The next moment, pandemonium was let loose. Cries and shouts of “Servant of the Jews!” “Soldier of Schuschnigg!” “Satan of Rome!” filled the air. A few moments later the face of the priest also was completely bespattered. With the saintly expression of a martyr, the young priest said to the rabbi: “Do not be angry with them, for they know not what they do.” And the rabbi replied, “God is great and almighty.
