J^AST year I was asked to write an article on anti-Semitism and the methods we were employing to fight it. I prefaced my remarks by expressing deep sorrow that such ar. evil thing should ever have raised its head in England, and I explained that this was not because there exists in this country, as in practically every land, a certain substream of anti-Semitism, but because it had been made the main plank of the platform of a certain political leader, who endeavored to hide the weakness of his economic and political theories English Jews Fight Anti-Semitism By NEVILLE LASK1, K. C. (President of Board of Deputies of British Jews) by resorting to the same tactics as had distinguished the Nazi Party in Germany. I outlined the steps we were taking to counter this evil end I emphasized in conclusion that we were first and foremost Englishmen of the Jewish faith, and that it was on that basis that we were fighting this new phenomenon in our social and public life. The last twelve months has not given us, I am afraid, much ground for optimism. The evil of which I wrote has been accentuated by the agitation, in many ways as artificial as the original, against the unhappy refugees from Germany. Their entry into this country in increasing numbers has been made the handle for renewed attacks on our co-religionists. The customary allegations have been made that they are taking the bread out of the mouth of the native Englishman, that they are stealing his job, that they are receiving from charity money which would otherwise have gone elsewhere. All these charges, which have been shown to be baseless, have supplied our enemies with more pabulum for their campaign of racial hatred and, at the same time, it has caused us to take renewed steps to fight this evil and to bring home more and more to the Eng’ish people the dangers which await any acceptance of so vile an ideology. We have continued, as in the past, to produce counter material, material which has been widely read and which.
