I am sure that the freedom and security of the American people of all faiths and beliefs will not be threatened as long as the great masses of the people unite to resist intolerance and oppression of any citizens, no matter how humble. We are about to celebrate again the Jewish New Year. We American Jews have cause for heartfelt thanksgiving for the blessings of peace and for the privilege of living and working in a land which guarantees religious and civic equality to all of its citizens. These great privileges carry with them high responsibility which I am confident that we, as Jews, will always recognize and loyally discharge to the best of our ability. For the co-religionists in many other lands the past year has continued to bring oppression, persecution and imminent danger. They are bowed down under the burden of fanaticism, hatred, prejudice and intolerance of a character never before equalled in the history of the world. A loyal, patriotic people has been brought to the depths of misery and despair. More than ever before they need our help and encouragement. We cannot, and must not, fail in our duty to them. By helping those who are less fortunate than we. we can best give concrete and lasting evidence that
