How Indianapolis (Continued from page 9) National Jewish Hospital for Tuberculosis in Denver, the Leo N. Levi Hospital in Hot Springs, and the National Farm School of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. There was one other effort which hastened the formation of the Jewish Federation and assisted in making an executive available. This was the Industrial Removal Office which had a very unique purpose. The large number of immigrants who came to our shores settled in New York, since to them that was America. Their knowledge of our country went no further. They had neither kith nor kin outside of New York. The congregation of large populations leads to social and health problems. The Industrial Removal Office set up committees in inland cities to receive the families sent out from New York, to place them in employment, and otherwise make them welcome in the community. Funds were made available to the committees for the care of these families for the period of adjustment and towards the employment of a suitable worker to direct activities. The stimulus towards a Federation thus came through this national cooperation. When the need for this service ceased and the Industrial Removal Office stepped out of the picture, the Federation continued to function. However, the Jewish community has other obligitions which are of a distinctively Jewish character, and for which it does not solicit support from the general community. For example, the problem of Jewish and religious education of children, the support of rational, civic, and protective institutions, and obligations to their people overseas who are oppressed in one country or another, and to Palestine. To meet this broader conception of Jewish responsibility, the Jewish community of Indianapolis formed the Jewish Welfare Fund, the function of which is to raise adequate funds each year to meet the obligations cited above as well as to sup(Continued on Page 33)
