it’s large enough it has a fat sound, and only the rich can afford the luxury. Slightly overwhelmed by my privilege of entry, I came to this Temple a stranger in a strange land—to offer my humble tribute of worship on this New Year’s Eve. The many entrances to the Temple were well guarded by squads of well groomed young men—each wore a distinguishing white flower. These were the ushers. They checked up entrance cards, and directed people to their seats, but mostly they checked up cards. There could be no gate crashers to this exclusive service. And once seated, these same young men went around distributing envelopes. They were handed out with such grave solicitous smiles that for a moment I imagined that I was receiving a note of peace—some personal word, maybe! But the envelopes carried memorial cards with space enough for the names of six departed relatives, and at the foot of the card, neatly printed, was the remark, “I am sending my cheque for $. . . . as a donation to the Temple.” All one had to do was fill in the amount, pop it back into its self-addressed envelope and drop it into a letter box. So simple—so smooth. A few dollars, or a lot for preference, and one’s dead would be accounted for and entered into the Temple Memorial Book. I wonder why my dead seemed to dissent. Perhaps they were not modem enough! Perhaps they disliked being sunk into the “mortgage." The Temple was almost filled— the congregation was pouring in from all entrances.
